The New School was founded by forward-thinking educators in 1919 to defy the intellectual constraints of a traditional college education. We are seeking a highly motivated, socially engaged, and creative thinker to serve as a Resident Director to work in the department of Residential Education. The Resident Director shares in the comprehensive development and management of the on-campus housing program for approximately 2,000 residents and supports the mission of The New School. Depending on the residence hall assignment, the Resident Director will oversee a residential community of approximately 200-700 students. The Resident Director assists with all aspects of the on-campus experience, including the implementation of the residential curriculum, supervision of student staff, student behavior, departmental operations, and other duties. This role works in conjunction with a team of other Resident Directors across campus to provide a holistic residential student experience. Finally, this position will supervise a team of Resident Advisors, Community Assistants, and potentially a graduate student in the Graduate Resident Advisor (GRA) position. This is a full-time, 12- month, live-on position, serves on-call, and supports evening and weekend activities. RESPONSIBILITIES Residential Curriculum
- Develop, implement, manage, and assess student engagement and community development initiatives utilizing a residential curricular approach grounded in student development theory.
- Collaborate with other departments across the university through the Student & Campus Life co-curriculum.
- Track engagement of residential students by utilizing the university's online engagement platform, Narwhal Nation (i.e. Campus Labs).
- Manage a residence hall budget of to assist with curricular initiatives.
- Serve as an advisor for the Hall Council of the assigned residential community.
- Actively engage with students and community through frequently attending community engagement events, community walk throughs and open office hours.
- Advise and support students concerning issues of academic success, identity and interpersonal development, and self-authorship.
Supervision
- Directly supervise a team of five (5) to fifteen (15) Resident Advisors (RAs). Depending on the residence hall assignment, the Resident Director may also supervise a graduate student in the Graduate Resident Advisor (GRA) role.
- Directly supervise a team of Community Assistants (CAs) to aid in the daily administrative operations of the residence hall.
- Complete student staff performance evaluations and provide on-going feedback throughout the academic year.
Student Behavior
- Serve in an on-call rotation and respond to student incidents as needed.
- Serve as a hearing officer to adjudicate varying levels of alleged policy violations.
- Mediate roommate conflicts as they arise in the residential community.
- Advise students with personal concerns, or refer them to other appropriate campus resources for assistance.
Departmental Operations
- Coordinate the completion of various administrative tasks within the residential community, including but not limited to, room condition reports, damage billing, health and safety inspections, mail, work orders, room changes, census rosters, etc.
- Collaborate with Campus Safety, Facilities, CleanTech, and IT Services to ensure students have an environment that is conducive for student learning and success.
- Facilitate operational aspects of residence hall openings and closings.
- Participate in weekly department-wide staff meetings and one-on-ones with supervisor.
- Serve on and potentially chair various departmental committees, including by not limited to, Student Staff Selection, Student Staff Training, Assessment, Residential Curriculum, Recognition, Operations & Website, and Student Leadership.
Additional Duties
- Assist with university initiatives, including but not limited to: Fall/Spring Orientation, Open House, Admitted Student Days, Block Party, Family Weekend, Commencement, Grad Week, etc.
- Manage the daily operations for Summer Housing for the residence hall, including but not limited to: RA supervision, programming, check-ins, check- outs, etc.
- Participate in occasional evening and weekend work.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Master's degree in higher education leadership or a similar concentration.
- Previous experience in Housing and Residential Life.
- Required to live on campus housing for the duration of employment. Ability to work full-time, 12-month, live -on position, serving in an on-call duty rotation for high-level crisis response and supports occasional weekend and evening events during the academic year and summer.
- Served in a position which requires an after-hours on call duty rotation to address student crises.
- Understanding of student development theory, including demonstrated experience with student development and community engagement.
- Knowledge of student behavioral interventions, including conflict resolution, safety initiatives, and civility education.
- Demonstrated crisis management skills, including problem-solving and critical thinking.
- Demonstrated experience supervising, developing, mentoring, and motivating a diverse student staff team.
- Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal skills, including sensitivity to cultural differences and working in diverse populations.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple collaborative projects and systems in a fast-paced environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - A minimum of 2 years of experience post Master's.
- Ability to navigate StarRez, Banner, Starfish, & Campus Labs.
- Demonstrated ability to use Google Suite for Work.
- Supervision of a professional or graduate student staff members.
- Experience using a curricular approach within a residence hall community.
- Experience advising a student group, Hall Council, Residence Hall Association or National Residence Hall Honorary chapter.
- Serving a residential student body in an urban environment.
- Experience building collaborative partnerships with faculty, administrators, students, parents, and community partners.
