The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is seeking four Resident Treatment Technicians to join the staff at the Independence Mental Health Institute (IMHI) and serve as the Crisis Response Team working with the facility's specialized patient population. These are full-time positions with strong opportunity for growth, development, and advancement and in addition to the base pay rate, feature an available shift differential of $0.90 per hour for second shift.

The Crisis Response Team will provide essential safety functions in the patient care areas of the facility, including, but not limited to, being present on and observing patient wards and patient activity areas, monitoring the tone of each area and identifying potential situations that need to be addressed, de-escalating potentially volatile situations, responding to and participating in emergency codes on the wards including elopements, conducting ward/patient counts and/or security checks, and interacting with patients utilizing approved de-escalation and interaction techniques designed to maintain a calm, therapeutic milieu with a focus on positive interactions. Team members will assist in the management, restraint, or seclusion of disruptive patients according to hospital policies and procedures to minimize injuries and maximize the safety of staff as well as model positive skills in language, behavior, attitude, and personal interactions.

Members of the Crisis Response Team will perform lead work responsibilities for Resident Treatment Workers (RTW) as assigned by the Registered Nurse and/or Charge Nurse, competently directing, assigning, and delegating tasks to that staff. These positions will assess training needs in relation to the proper application of restraints and responding to emergency codes, create and deliver training to staff including new staff during New Employee Orientation, and participate in staff debriefings.

IMHI provides inpatient treatment and acute psychiatric services. The facility offers several services including individualized treatment plans and support for children and adolescent patients to continue their education. Individuals are encouraged to collaborate with staff members in formulating their own plan. Medication, group counseling, and activities therapies might be included as well.
