RN– Emergency Department (ED)Observation

Cleveland Clinic's Emergency Department (ED) has a 23-hour observation unit that provides patients withadditionaltime for evaluation and treatment. Patients may be referred to the observation unit if their condition requires more time than the ED can provide, or if their condition is not clear after an ED visit. During observation, patients may receiveadditionalblood tests, X-rays, consultations with specialists, and treatment. After 24 hours, doctors will re-examine the patient todetermineif they need further treatment or can go home. Patients may be discharged home or admitted to the hospital based on their progress.

A caregiver in this position works7:00PM– 7:30AM.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Provide direct nursing care.

  • Implement, monitor, evaluate, update and revise patient care plans.

  • Monitor, record, document and communicate patients' conditions.

  • Administerprescribed medications and treatments.

  • Note and carry out physician and nursing orders.

  • Assess and coordinate patients' discharge needs.

  • Educate patients and their families.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing.

  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).

  • Oneyearof current acute care RNor Emergency Departmentexperience. Will consider military RN experience.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelor of science in nursing (BSN).

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA). This will berequiredwithin one year ofstartdate.

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA). This will berequiredwithin one year ofstartdate.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination.

  • Involves extensive standing and walking.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
