Job Duties

Providing Physical and Psychiatric Nursing Care Skills and Medication

Administration Duties:

Consistently and accurately, according to CSH policies and procedures, professional standards, and as directed by NUM/RNC/AOD designee:

* Observes and monitors age-related illnesses, physical characteristics, developmental tasks, and learning needs, using knowledge of the principles of human growth and development and corresponding patients care needs over the life span, notifying the NUM, AOD, RNC, or LIP/MOD in emergency situations or with any pertinent information as indicated.

* Attends and actively participates in treatment plan meetings. Develops and updates nursing related aspects of the integrated interdisciplinary Treatment Plan with specific goals and interventions delineating all nursing actions unique to patient needs.

* Provides and documents patient/family education to promote increased awareness, adequate knowledge and/or skills needed to assist patients in their recovery.

* Accurately completes admission/transfer/discharge duties including but not limited to assessment, documentation, hand-off communication, and notifications as needed.

* Accurately performs selected nursing procedures consistent with departmental nursing competencies.

* Responds promptly to individual patient's behavior, including aggressive outbursts/unit disruptions, utilizing least restrictive nursing patient-centered interventions in compliance with CSH Policies/Procedures.

* Provides CPR and first aid in emergency situations.

* Provides direct patients care duties as indicated.

* Supports psychiatric recovery concepts by participating in unit and treatment mall activities.

* Ability to perform infection prevention and control practices and appropriately apply standards in daily activities.

Providing Leadership through Charge Nurse Duties:

Consistently and accurately, according to CSH policies and procedures, professional standards, and as directed by NUM/RNC/AOD designee:

* Informs the NUM/RNC/AOD of pertinent information related to patients, unit, and employee concerns or problems, including interventions taken to address identified areas and outcomes/status.

* Ensures staff assignment sheets are completed within 1 hour after nursing report and that staff assignments cover unit needs (1:1, treatment mall/activity facilitation and support, etc.)

* Through delegation, ensures that information and equipment necessary or potentially necessary for providing safe care for upcoming shift is accounted for/obtained.

* Actively engages in time management strategies in order to maximize time in the milieu, interacting with patients, role-modeling and coaching staff in therapeutic interventions, pro-actively identifying early warning signs of potential unsafe behavior, and facilitating least restrictive interventions to decrease chances of behavioral crisis.

* Provides direction and leadership during emergency responses and 10-33s- provides clear and prompt direction to nursing staff and Security Lt./staff regarding need for physical/mechanical restraint and/or seclusion in order to prevent harm to patient, others, and/or staff.

* Actively provides direction and support throughout response and until imminent patient and/or staff safety risks are addressed based on assessment and observation of environment (maximizes delegation of tasks requiring a staff to be off unit or in nursing station)

* Collaborates with RNCA colleagues, NUM/RNC regarding staffing to address changes in unit acuity as needed.

* Assists in oversight of orientation of new or transferred employees/student nurses as assigned by the NUM/RNC or designee.

Minimum Qualifications

* Require License or eligibility to practice as Registered Nurse by Virginia State Board of Nursing in the State of Virginia.

* Require graduation from an accredited school of registered nursing.

* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with successful outcomes with an interdisciplinary treatment team and to implement an effective Nursing Plan of Care as part of an integrated interdisciplinary Treatment Plan.

* Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of professional registered nursing to provide care appropriate to adult populations, including patient care treatments, wound prevention, falls prevention, and implementation of infection prevention and control practices

* Able to make appropriate nursing assessments and interventions for existing or potential patient care needs

* Ability to safely and efficiently administer medications, assess effectiveness, and provide teaching to patient and family

* Ability to perform infection prevention and control practices and appropriately apply standards in daily activities

* Demonstrate oral, written, and electronic skills to adequately communicate with others including patient, family, and other customers; provide patient/family education; complete medical record documentation, and handoff information satisfactorily to other caregivers

* Demonstrate successful interventions to manage conflict including crises and aggressive behavior, motivate others, work effectively in a constantly changing environment, and tolerate emotional stress

* Some knowledge of the laws that identify & describe types of patients admitted to CSH, and of the accreditation/regulating organizations that establish standards

* Computer skills to perform document development, learning tools, and electronic communication

* Ability to hear and see in order to assess and respond to safety concerns

* Ability to work overtime in a staffing emergency

* Successfully complete T.O. (Therapeutic Options of Virginia) Training and CPR

* Supervisory skills to include performance improvement activities, documentation, and effective leadership ability

* Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.

* Physical requirements necessary: repetitious walking and/or standing; bending, lifting and reaching overhead to position, restrain, transfer, transport, and/or escort patients, and to perform or assist in activities of daily living.

Additional Considerations

* Strongly prefer experience in providing nursing care in healthcare setting according to the Nursing Process.

* Strongly prefer experience working with people with mental illness, geriatric issues, and/or substance abuse.

* Strongly prefer supervisory experience.

* BSN preferred.
