Why does the job exist?This position will be responsible for enforcing the New Mexico Occupational Health and Safety Act to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, and biological agents at workplaces statewide. How does it get done?- Conduct compliance inspections and investigations within various New Mexico industries to enforce state and federal regulations - Communicate appropriate abatement periods to employers and verify abatement of violations- Provide abatement assistance to employers when appropriate- Complete inspection reports and case files for workplace safety and health inspections and fatality investigations- Communicate status of open inspection reports to Compliance Supervisor- Receive and enter allegations of hazards through complaints, referrals, and reports of accidents- Respond to public requests for information in a professional and timely manner- Conduct assigned interventions and input reports- Maintain assigned equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and Bureau guidelines- Review and comply with updated Bureau directives - Research and review current occupational health and safety regulatory requirements and general issues- Attend and complete formal training as scheduled, in accordance with Bureau training plans Who are the customers?- New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment - Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations - Internal staff Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will have experience in the following:- Working in a broad range of safety and health- Inspecting and investigating occupational safety and health- Planning and technical writing - Meeting regulatory deadlines with attention to detail- Being bilingual/fluent in English and Spanish Minimum QualificationBachelor's degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Engineering and two (2) years of work experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, Air Quality Management, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Hazardous Waste Management, Wildlife Management, and/or Water Resources. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Substitution TableThese combinations of education and experience qualify you for the position: Education Experience Education Experience 1 High School Diploma or Equivalent AND 6 years of experience OR High School Diploma or Equivalent AND 6 years of experience 2 Associate's degree in the field(s) specified in the minimum qualification AND 4 years of experience Associate's degree or higher in any field AND 6 years of experience 3 Bachelor's degree in the field(s) specified in the minimum qualification AND 2 years of experience 4 Master's degree or higher in the field(s) specified in the minimum qualification AND 0 years of experience •Education and years of experience must be related to the purpose of the position. •If Minimum Qualification requires a specific number of semester hours in a field (e.g. 6 semester hours in Accounting), applicants MUST have those semester hours in order to meet the minimum qualifications. No substitutions apply for semester hours.Employment RequirementsMust possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment. Working ConditionsWork is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. Significant in-state and some out-of-state travel is required.
