Summary of position:

Under the general direction of the Director of Safety or designee, the Safety Officer assists in the response and reporting of workplace violence and staff injuries; identifying and submitting of environmental safety hazards to the Department of Corrections (DOC) for mitigation; conducting routine safety rounds in all facilities where CHS employees are located; engaging with staff to identify safety gaps or environmental health concerns; providing support and follow-up for staff involved in workplace violence incidents or who have suffered workplace injuries or accidents; facilitating safety-related education and training; and performing other related duties.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Respond on-site to serious incidents of workplace violence, occupational injury, or environmental hazards, to gather factual information and develop a detailed report of findings.
  • Assist in maintaining workplace violence, occupational injury, and other safety-related databases and logs. Analyzes data to identify trends and areas for improvement in safety practices.
  • Compile workplace violence and staff injury reports for distribution to required entities.
  • Coordinates the submission of documentation relevant to incidents of occupational injury or an accident to New York City Health and Hospitals (H+H) or Physician Affiliate Group of New York's Human Resources department.
  • Performs regularly scheduled and unannounced walkthrough of clinic facilities and other work areas and engage with personnel to identify, document and address their workplace concerns in a timely manner.
  • Prepare written summaries and fire safety checklists for safety rounds conducted at Rikers Island, community warehouses, and court-based facilities.
  • Aid in establishing methods to improve safe clinic operations efficiency while reducing the risks associated with workplace violence incidents, environmental hazards, and overall staff safety.
  • Conduct in-service education to healthcare personnel on safety procedures, including but not limited to situational awareness, workplace violence prevention, emergency response actions, and crisis management.
  • Represent CHS as needed in internal or external committees and workgroups where Safety representation or perspective is required.
  • Assist in facilitating monthly and quarterly workplace violence and safety meetings with key stakeholders.
  • Assist in planning for the program/service through consultation with clinic leadership and staff and other CHS disciplines in order to coordinate joint WPV/safety and management objectives.
  • Implement and maintain safety standards and protocols that comply with local, state, and federal regulations. This includes conducting routine safety inspections and risk assessments to identify potential hazards.
  • Other relevant assignments as required.

Department Preferences:

  • Bachelor's Degree in occupational health and safety or a related field; and,
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in a supervisory or administrative capacity in health care administration or operations management; or,
  • An equivalent combination of training, education and experience in related fields and educational disciplines; and,
  • Strong analytical skills for risk assessment and ability to develop reports and analysis
  • In-depth understanding of occupational safety standards with proficiency in conducting safety inspections and audits
  • Strong training and instructional abilities
  • High degree of professionalism, courtesy, strong work ethic, integrity, regard for confidentiality and ability to work with discretion on sensitive matters

Minimum Qualifications

1.A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Engineering or Social Sciences, Health Care Specialization, Physical Sciences or related discipline and four (4) years of progressively responsible administrative, managerial and/or consultative experience and background; or

2.A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in disciplines, as listed in “1” above, and five (5) years of progressively responsible administrative, managerial and consultative experience and background; or

3.A satisfactory equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience. However, all candidates must have a minimum of a Baccalaureate degree in disciplines, as listed in “1” above.
