Position SummaryReporting to the EH&S Director, the Safety Specialist is primarily responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive health and safety programs to ensure a safe and healthy working environment. The Safety Specialist ensures compliance with all health and safety laws and regulations, promotes a culture of safety and health throughout the organization, and integrates lean principles to enhance safety processes.Duties/Responsibilities
- Develop and implement comprehensive health and safety programs to identify and mitigate workplace hazards.
- Conduct regular health and safety audits and risk assessments to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.
- Create and deliver health and safety training programs for all employees, including specialized training for high-risk areas.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal health and safety regulations and industry best practices.
- Lead incident investigations to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Develop emergency response plans and conduct regular drills to ensure preparedness.
- Promote a culture of health and safety throughout the organization by engaging employees at all levels in health and safety initiatives.
- Maintain and update health and safety policies and procedures to reflect changes in regulations and best practices.
- Assist in the certification and maintenance of the ISO 45001 system at the appropriate time.
- Integrate lean principles into safety processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
- Implement continuous improvement practices to reduce waste and improve safety performance.
Other Duties
- Join local and provincial health and safety interest groups, representing the company with stakeholders.
- Construct dashboards and KPIs to track health and safety performance and share information with stakeholders.
- Stay informed on global health and safety trends, regulations, best practices, and customer requirements to formulate actions that improve workplace health and safety.
- Drive corporate change regarding health and safety requirements, including customer and supplier expectations.
- Develop training programs to increase health and safety awareness, including for C-suite personnel.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, environmental health, engineering, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of relevant experience.
- Experience in health and safety program development and implementation is required.
- Familiarity with ISO 45001 and health and safety regulations is required.
- Knowledge and experience with lean principles and continuous improvement methodologies are highly desirable.
