SanitationDivision: The Sanitation Division strives to perform the collection responsibilities for the City in a timely and efficient manner. The Sanitation team offers a variety of collection services at no additional charge to our residents.

General Description: The City of Jacksonville is looking for an Equipment Operator for the Sanitation Division in Public Services. This is an exciting opportunity to come join our team and receive training and career development geared towards advancing a career in public services. Equipment Operators are often responsible for a wide variety of jobs. Operator performs intermediate semiskilled work operating a municipal solid waste collection vehicle; serving as an equipment operator I; does related work as required. Work is performed under immediate supervision as a sanitation worker and regular supervision as an equipment operator and is evaluated by observation for efficiency and effectiveness. Supervision may be exercised over assigned personnel when working as an Equipment Operator I.

The hours for this position are generally Monday through Friday from 2:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

The salary posted is the full salary range for this position. The starting salary is expected to be in the range of $33,806.76 - $44,018.98 depending on qualifications.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

Collecting municipal solid waste; pushing and pulling garbage containers; lifting and dumping garbage containers; directing traffic; serving as backup drive when assigned; ensuring proper completion of assigned work and adequate safety precautions; providing proper equipment maintenance.

* Collects municipal solid waste.

* Cleans area around collection vehicle and collection truck.

* Operates container lift mechanism to dump collection container.

* Operates packer blade mechanism to compress refuse.

* Directs traffic and guides truck operation in congested areas.

* Disseminates collection information to the general public.

* Cleans and washes refuse collection equipment.

* Assembles and cleans refuse and recycling containers.

* Assists in the delivery of trucks to or the Dial-A-Truck Program.

* Supervises sanitation worker when assigned to collection route/special pickup.

* Acts as Equipment Operator II, when given assignment to drive collection route.

* Performs pre-trip and post trip inspections of motorized collection equipment.

* Operates rear loading and automated refuse collection vehicle when assigned.

* Operates front-end commercial refuse collection equipment when assigned.

* Transport municipal solid waste to disposal site as required.

* Performs related tasks as required.

Required Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the completion of high school with at least two (2) years experience in the field of municipal solid waste collection.

Special Requirements:

Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the operation and servicing of motorized equipment; general knowledge of traffic and regulations; ability to perform continuous heavy manual work at a steady pace in adverse weather conditions; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; dependability; ability to operate sanitation equipment is a safe manner; ability to supervise and establish effective working relationships with co-workers.
