S/he will provide case management for students with special health care needs and chronic health conditions and management acute health needs when on site. S/he will serve as a resource person to school personnel regarding student health issues. Also, will develop, implement, and present school health education programs.Responsibilities:1. Coordinates the daily operation of School Health Services to meet mandates of the Public Schools of North Carolina in assigned schools.2. For assigned schools, identifies and coordinates health services for students with chronic/acute health needs or potential emergency needs.3. Develops and implements health care plans/emergency action plans for identified students with appropriate staff.4. Identifies and assesses students with acute or chronic health conditions and reacts appropriately to potential school health emergency situations. 5. Serves as leader in assigned schools for communicable disease control/immunization compliance.6. Complies with state and local infection control and bloodborne pathogen policies, mandates, and guidelines.7. Assists Wayne County Public Schools with control measures (exclusions/readmissions) when students or staff have communicable conditions or nuisance diseases.8. Assists school personnel with monitoring/auditing student immunization records and providing report to principals.9. Assists assigned schools with eliminating/reducing health-related barriers to learning through screenings/health appraisals.10. Coordinates/performs mass vision screenings for select grades and screenings for specific students who may be experiencing vision difficulty.11. Makes professional referrals/follow-up for students who do not pass screening.12. Assists school support personnel with screenings by providing follow-up on referrals.13. Evaluates students for health conditions that may interfere with learning, making appropriate referrals/follow-up.14. Serves as case manager for students with healthcare needs in the school setting.15. Acts as liaison between school/family/physician to coordinate health services/implement health accommodation plans at school.16. Participates on school-based intervention teams when health issues are involved. 17. Provides required medication/invasive procedure training and follow-up audits for school personnel when students have special health care needs.18. Utilizes professional nursing documentation standards to record nursing activities and all school health encounters.19. Transfers appropriate information to the students' cumulative school health records, complying with FERPA regulations.20. Follows school board policy regarding record retention/disposition.21. Ensures an effective, efficient work environment by keeping Manager, School Health Services informed of activities, any difficulties, and status in meeting established deadlines for reports/projects.22. Develops, implements, presents appropriate school and community related health education programs for specific health conditions/wellness/disease prevention in assigned schools based on identified needs or conditions.23. Acts as a role model and enthusiastically supports the Corporate and School Health Services department.24. Keeps current in trends and best practices in School Health Nursing. 25. Completes continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements as applicable.26. Applies knowledge of principles of universal precautions. Routinely uses personal protective equipment and infection control barriers or devices to avoid risk of exposure to self and others. WAYNEOther information:Education Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required. Master of Science in Nursing MSN is preferred.Licensure/Certification Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina required. Current National School Nurse Certification or attained within 3 years.Experience Previous School Health/Public Health (Child Health Program) experience preferred. A minimum of 3 years nursing experience is required, preferably in Pediatric/Adolescent Nursing. Case management experience helpful.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Considerable knowledge of school health nursing practices and professional standards. Ability to provide health education programs to diverse audiences. Ability to work independently and to manage multiple priorities. Excellent decision-making and case management skills. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with teammates, administrators, school-based intervention teams, other health care providers and service agencies. Ability to communicate effectively with multi-age students, parents, school personnel, and health care professionals. Ability to provide own transportation to various work locations, including occasional home visits. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
