JOB SUMMARYThe School Resource Officer performs specialized law enforcement work assigned to elementary, middle and high schools.The purpose of the school resource officer is to be a peace officer by maintaining order on campus with the legal authority to arrest if required.The SRO is a resource teacher in areas of law enforcement education and can play the role as counselor, by listening and assisting students, faculty and staff with various problems. The SRO is responsible for diverting minor law infractions through school disciplinary avenues and parent counseling. The position develops various classroom presentations on a variety of subjects from substance abuse, youth and violence, motor vehicle law and safe driving, juvenile law etc., and works with faculty to address student classrooms when requested. Work also includes providing security at school events and providing traffic control on campus. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated through observation, discussion, and review of reports for adherence to laws, department procedures, and proper judgement.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSEnforces federal, state, and local laws, ordinances and assist school officials with enforcement of applicable Board of Education policies and administrative regulations.Investigates criminal activity committed on school property or involving students assigned to the officers school.Assists school administration in disciplinary activities as requested.Counsels students in special situations as needed or requested by the appropriate school officials or parents.Establishes rapport and communications with students, faculty and staff to bridge the gap and create trusting relationships with law enforcement; provides advice and counsel.Answers question that students, faculty, and staff may have about juvenile law or North Carolina laws.Assists law enforcement officers from other agencies with their investigations concerning students attending the school that the officer is assigned.Notifies appropriate school officials regarding potentially dangerous situations which may occur on school property.Assumes a command role during a criminal incident on school property until authorized personnel arriveMaintains communication with school administration and supervisors through assigned radio communication.Works special events and provides security for those events as needed by school officials.Plans and executes traffic control on the school campus and closely surrounding areas.Performs work as a general duty law enforcement officer during non-school months and on an as needed basis.Prepares and submits records and reports of activities and criminal investigations and law enforcement incidents.Patrols the County in a vehicle, on foot or by other means; serves a variety of civil and criminal papers; responds to calls; examines premises of unoccupied residences or buildings; detects unusual conditions, may maintain surveillance and observation for stolen cars, missing persons, or suspects.Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior; completes calls by determining true nature of the situation and taking whatever legal or persuasive action is warranted.Investigates possible crimes through observation, questioning witnesses, and gathering physical evidence; performs investigative tasks, arrests and processes criminal suspects; presents findings in court.Serves warrants, apprehends and processes criminal suspects and transports to County magistrate and/or County detention facilities.Provides courtroom security for judges, the public, and inmates; calls court into session and insures judges security and other needs are met; performs coordination, seclusion, and other procedures with juries; escorts inmates to and from the courtroom.Operates two-way radio to receive instructions and information from or to report information to headquarters; maintains vehicle, weapons and other equipment in standards working order.Transports inmates, mental patients and others to other jurisdictions, medical facilities, other correctional or related facilities.Prepares detailed records and reports of activities using prescribed methods.Assists other law enforcement and emergency agencies in controlling emergency situations.Advises the public on laws and local ordinances; serves papers as needed.Assists stranded motorists; gives information and directions to visitors and the general public.Performs other related duties as assigned.
