When you work for Texas Materials, you are helping to support and build the infrastructure of Texas.Position OverviewThe Asphalt Paver Screed Operator is responsible for operating a variety of wheeled or tracked asphalt pavers ranging from small (sidewalk, walkways), medium (parking lot, driveways, county roads) or large (city roads, airport runways, taxiways, mainlane highway) to provide a smooth riding, evenly placed asphalt surface and monitoring the right depths and widths while operating a free-floating or fixed, front or rear mounted screed.Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)Perform daily equipment maintenance and inspectionsOperate equipment in a safe and efficient mannerPrior to and at the end of each shift ensure the screed is clean and properly adjusted for the type of paving to be completed.Monitor temperature settingsAdjust the screed paving reference components to the project specs, paving width, depth (thickness), grade, and slopeEnsure proper contact between gates and the paving surfaceAdjust endgate springs and chains for clearanceBe able to troubleshoot problems and make the necessary screed adjustments concerning the asphalt during paving operationsAssist paving crew with site preparation and any other activity as neededAttend daily safety meetingsFollow safety policies and proceduresWork hours adjusted to meet the project's needs; days, nights, and weekendsAble to work in adverse weather conditions, hot or cold temperaturesObserve distribution of paving material to adjust machine settings or material flow, and indicate low spots for workers to add material.Control paving machines to push dump trucks and to maintain a constant flow of asphalt or other material into hoppers or screeds.Fill side tanks, hoppers, or machines with paving materials.Shovel and rake blacktop.Control traffic as needed.Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required.Other duties as may be assigned.QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.Education/ExperienceMinimum of a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.Minimum of 1 year experience and/or training in a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Minimum of 3 years of road construction experience preferred.Work RequirementsMust be 18 years in age or older.Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.Must maintain current driver's license that meets state requirements, i.e., CDL, Class A and/or B Driver with possible hazmat and tanker endorsements.Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary; some overnight travel may be required.Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.Knowledge/Skill RequirementsKnowledge of aggregate sizes and classifications.Knowledge of trenching and shoring standards.Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently under a variety of working conditions.Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as being able to work independently with attention to detail.Ability to operate heavy and complex equipment requiring skill and the exercise of independent judgment.Physical RequirementsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to signal and handle equipment.The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders.The employee must occasionally lift and/or move anywhere up to 50-75 lbs.Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.Able to work in all weather conditions.While performing the duties of the job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock or burn.The noise level in some areas of the work environment may be loud, but is typically moderate.The statements included in this job description are not intended to be all-inclusive.
