I. Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of a registered nurse, assists with the surgical process from optimal positioning of the patient through closure, wound dressing, and drainage. Performs a variety of other duties to assist a surgeon during surgery to include retracting tissues under direction and tying suturing materials in accordance with Houston Healthcare standards. Assists in patient care related activities including starting intravenous solutions, inserting tubes, etc. Provides nursing care and completes tasks delegated for all categories of patients served. Utilizes patient's individualized plan of care in providing care and collecting data relating to patients needs and response. Provides care in accordance with Houston Healthcare's Plan for the Provision of Nursing Care, standards of care and standards of performance. Provides immediate support to the surgeon and acts as a vital resource to the staff of the operating room. Assists in maintaining correct count of instruments, sutures, and sponges. Required to take Call.
II. Qualifications:
A. Education & Training:
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program and a Surgical Assistant Program.
B. Experience:
Documented surgical technologist experience required, minimum of one year OR experience preferred.
C. Required Certification/Registration/Licensure:
Current AHA/ARC BLS certification. Current Surgical Technical (CST) certification. Current Certified Surgical First Assistant (CFSA) certification.
D. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Must be able to utilize surgical instruments, supplies and necessary equipment during surgical procedures. Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure safe, quality patient care during the operative procedure. Must be proficient in skills required during procedures to include (but not limited to) 1) Clamping, cauterizing, suturing, inserting, injecting, manipulating, retracting, cutting, and ligating tissue as necessary. 2) Any necessary involvement in hemostasis, including but not limited to the utilization of ties, vessel loops, clip appliers, digital pressure, packing, appropriate manipulation of sutures, etc. 3) Participation in volume replacement or autotransfusion techniques as necessary and appropriate. 4) Any further applicable instrumentation or actions deemed necessary by the surgeon. Must be able to utilize personal protective equipment, such as gloves, gown, and mask, etc.
