**Description**

The High Line is both a nonprofit organization and a public park on the West Side of Manhattan. Through our work with communities on and off the High Line, were devoted to reimagining public spaces to create connected, healthy neighborhoods and cities.

Built on a historic, elevated rail line, the High Line was always intended to be more than a park. You can walk through the gardens, view art, experience a performance, enjoy food or beverage, or connect with friends and neighborsall while enjoying a unique perspective of New York City.

Nearly 100% of our annual budget comes through donations. The High Line is owned by the City of New York and we operate under a license agreement with NYC Parks.

Job description

This is a full-time, non-exempt, temporary position that requires working outdoors in all weather conditions on evenings and weekends, from the beginning of April through October.

The seasonal custodian is an integral part of the Custodial team. Under the general supervision of the custodial manager, the temporary custodian works with a diverse team of custodians, horticulturists, maintenance technicians, and High Line administrators to achieve the highest standards of cleanliness and organization throughout the park. The seasonal custodians tasks include but are not limited to the following:

Responsibilities

* Maintain a high standard of cleanliness throughout the High Line, both on the park, in HQ and at street-level, including but not limited to public gathering areas, bathrooms, access points, elevators, stairs, drinking fountains, and office areas

* Use specialized, sometimes green, cleaning products and cleaning techniques to maintain the High Lines many unique features and according to manufacturers instructions

* Report and remove graffiti, non-approved advertising, gum, stickers, and trash

* Participate in snow and ice removal

* Maintain and report on inventory of custodial supplies

* Quickly respond to spills, bathroom malfunctions, potential hazards, and other various requests

* Work collaboratively with all team members to accomplish daily assignments and tasks in a timely manner

* Communicate with managers and team on the status of daily tasks and projects

* Work collaboratively with programming, operations, and events staff to prepare the High Line for visitor use and assist in maintaining the rules of the park

* Operate pressure washers, snow removal equipment, and other small equipment

* Act as an ambassador for Friends of the High Line while maintaining a high level of customer service with park visitors, vendors, and team members

* Other duties and projects as assigned

Required qualifications

* 1 year custodial experience

* Must be extremely dependable, punctual, detail-oriented

* Good verbal communication with staff and public alike

* Ability to maintain a regular schedule of maintenance and cleaning tasks on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis;

* Able to work alone or in teams

* Demonstrate good judgment and a professional demeanor

Preferred qualifications

* 1 2 years custodial or maintenance experience, preferably in a public space or outdoor space

Required abilities

Candidates must be able to:

* Work outside in all weather situations, work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed

* Use power equipment with training

* Ability to move about spaces quickly on the High Line; to reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and regularly lift and/or move 50 lbs; and occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects using proper tools and leverage methods in excess of 75 lbs
