The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County Entomology Program is seeking a Seasonal Program Assistant to provide full-time support for agriculture-related research trials and assist in day-to-day operations at the Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center (LIHREC) located in Riverhead, NY. The Seasonal Program Assistant will be expected to work 8 am - 4:30 pm Monday through Friday (30-40 hours per week). The position will start in May 2024 and end in September 2024 with the option of continuing part-time work in the fall if available.
Job Responsibilities:
* Maintain on-site and off-site research trials
* Perform farm/greenhouse duties including but not limited to planting, potting, weeding, watering, and cleaning greenhouse and/or farm equipment)
* Assist with data collection and entry
* Travel weekly to off-site locations to install and replace insect traps
* Manage program files and records
* Record photographs and/or videos of experiments for documentation and future presentations
Qualifications:
* High school diploma or equivalent GED, plus 6 months volunteer or work experience.
* Ability to work outdoors and perform various field activities.
* Ability to work with and touch live insects (i.e., aphids, caterpillars, mealybugs, and other common garden pests).
* Ability to understand and implement written and oral communication.
* Must be reliable and able to work independently as well as part of a team
* Ability to lift 20-30 lbs. unassisted.
* Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position, including valid NYS driver's license and personal vehicle for on-the-job transportation, 3 years driving experience, and able to meet acceptable background check standards, if required. Mileage reimbursed at Federal rate.
* Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate or defined in the offer letter.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (ex. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or equivalent software.
* Comfortable working in an agricultural setting in proximity to various farming operations, tools, and equipment.
* Able to understand and follow all safety and work site policies.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Previous experience volunteering or working in agriculture.
* Interest in entomology, agriculture, horticulture, environmental science, or any other related life science
