NATURE OF WORK
This classification involves seasonal supervisory work in the area of recreation. Duties are performed within well-established procedures related to the coordination of recreational activities within the City's Leisure Services Department.
An employee in this classification is responsible for assisting in the planning, directing, organizing and coordinating community recreation programs for youth, including cultural arts, arts and crafts, physical activities, special events, and aquatic activities. Work requires initiative and originality in developing specialized methods, equipment and techniques to conduct large or widespread recreation programs. Employees work within departmental policies and procedures but exercise independent judgment in the application of specialized knowledge of community recreation programming. Supervision may be exercised over a group of recreational personnel. Effective communication skills, the ability to receive, follow and provide oral instructions; utilize tact and courtesy when dealing with subordinate staff, the general public and program participants are required. Assignments are normally performed on a seasonal basis at a center, school, or playground/park and may require evening and weekend hours. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor (permanent) who reviews work through observation and personal conferences for attainment of desired program results.
Seasonal Program Dates: June 12, 2025 - August 13, 2025
Schedule: Varies (Up to 40 hours per week)
Examples of Duties
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
* Develops and supervises the implementation of games, sports, individual and group activities, arts and crafts, special events, and aquatic related activities for an assigned recreational program setting
* Displays leadership ability in planning and directing recreational activities, issues and maintains recreational equipment, teaches participants to safely and correctly operate playground equipment, maintains discipline, teaches fair play and sportsmanship
* Administers first aid, promotes safety, prepares correspondence to parents, responds to phone calls from parents and maintains an effective line of communication with all participant guardians
* Opens, closes and secures buildings as needed, attends meetings and training clinics
* Performs related work as required
Requirements
EDUCATION
* Graduation from an accredited high school or G.E.D. equivalency diploma.
* PROOF OF HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPLETED EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)
* Report card, transcript, or class schedule is acceptable
EXPERIENCE
* Two (2) years or eight (8) seasons of fulltime paid experience (preferably in a supervisory position) involving recreational or arts and crafts programs or child care OR current certification by the State of Florida as a certified school teacher.
* Work experience can be substituted with 2 years (48 credit hours) from an accredited college or university with a declared major in recreation or a closely related field.
* Certified teachers will meet the minimum requirements.
* Community theater experience preferred.
* Basic swimming skills preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
* Must possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
* Must obtain a valid Florida driver's license prior to hire.
* CPR/AED and First Aid Certification preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical:
* Moderate physical effort in light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to fifty (50) pounds. Basic swimming skills are highly recommended.
Work Environment:
* Work is performed primarily outdoors in various weather conditions. Tasks may be required to be performed with exposure to adverse temperatures and inclement weather.
Sensory:
* The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Required to read and speak English, communicate with coworkers, supervisors and the general public.
