This role is essential for maintaining campus safety by actively patrolling, inspecting facilities and grounds, and enforcing behavioral standards. The Security Assistant position is anticipated to be a six-month appointment. Scheduled work hours are Monday through Thursday from 4:30 pm to 9:00 pm, totaling 18 hours per week.This is a part-time, non-permanent position and not eligible for benefits. Sick leave is accrued at a rate of one hour per 40 hours worked. Please NOTE: According to Washington State Administrative Code (WAC) 357-04-045, if you have held a part-time hourly, or temporary position, after July 1, 2022 within Grays Harbor College, you may not qualify for the position and cannot be considered. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct regular patrols of campus buildings and grounds, utilizing foot or vehicle patrols, two-way radio communication, and adhering to established safety protocols to ensure a secure environment.
  • Manage building access, including opening and securing entrances, turning lights on and off as needed, and closing areas at day's end.
  • Inspect campus areas for potential fire and safety hazards, addressing issues as feasible, and reporting to Campus Operations for necessary follow-up.
  • Perform routine checks on emergency equipment, including monthly and quarterly inspections of elevator phones, call buttons, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers.
  • Respond to emergencies, providing first aid or backup assistance in critical situations as directed by emergency dispatch, and addressing security incidents such as burglar alarms.
  • Oversee campus activities, verifying identification when necessary, managing spectators during events, and enforcing college regulations to maintain a safe environment.
  • Document security incidents and log relevant information in the reporting system.
  • Conduct preventative patrols, ensuring the security of doors, windows, and campus facilities to deter theft, unauthorized entry, or property damage.
  • Monitor parking lots for unauthorized activity, respond to incidents involving stolen property, parking issues, and other disturbances, and issue citations as needed. Report illegal activities and provide assistance to law enforcement when required.
  • Handle lost property, receive complaints, and conduct preliminary investigations, assisting in de-escalating any situations posing a risk to individuals or property.
  • Respond to non-felony incidents, fire alarms, and campus threat situations, reset alarms, assist in firefighting if necessary, and aid in building evacuations.
  • Direct visitors to appropriate campus locations, provide escort services upon request, and offer assistance as needed.
  • Check in on individuals working alone on campus grounds, assist with safety concerns, and provide emergency aid if necessary.
  • Complete required documentation, including daily shift logs, incident reports, and related forms.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in security and safety practices through professional development, training sessions, and industry-relevant workshops.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, including the correct use of equipment and materials, compliance with SDS guidelines, and safe body mechanics.
  • Act professionally, ensuring courteous interactions with team members and others, in alignment with the college's mission and values.
  • Carry out additional duties assigned to meet departmental needs.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in security, public safety, or law enforcement.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's license from Washington or another state, with a clean driving record.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain certification within 60 days of hire).
  • No prior felony convictions.
