Summary:
Please Note: This position offers an additional $48 per day for at home dog handling.
The K9 Security Officer utilizes a canine in the performance of their duties to provide a secure environment for patient care functions of Confluence Health sites by protecting patients, visitors and staff through the patrol of buildings, property and grounds to reduce incidents of workplace violence. The officer participates in search activities in response to illicit substances; responds to, evaluates and assists with mitigating any security related issues; trains and cares for the dog at work and home and responds to any urgent situation in the assigned facility or to any request for assistance from other security officers. The officer patrols multiple locations considered a security risk such as emergency departments, main entrances, inpatient care units, exterior buildings and grounds, parking garages, pediatric units, and medical and office buildings. The nature of duties requires the ability to report to assigned location upon notification, generally within 60 minutes of primary assigned location.
Position Reports To: Director of Security & Emergency Preparedness.
Essential Functions:
Provide physical presence and support throughout Confluence Health facilities and property to maintain a safe environment. Answer radio and phone calls for assistance. Work with Security Supervision and Management to troubleshoot CCTV camera issues, Access Control and other facility issues. Assist staff, clients and visitors with emergencies and safety/security concerns. Patrols assigned site on foot or in vehicle; checks for unsafe conditions, hazards, unlocked doors, security violations, blocked ingress and egress, mechanical problems, and unauthorized persons; inspects buildings and grounds using appropriate equipment and protective gear.Conduct rounds of Confluence Health facilities with K9 on both scheduled and unscheduled tours to identify visitors, strangers, and/or suspicious individuals who have no official Confluence Health business. Verify Confluence Health issued staff/contractor/visitor/ family identification. Enforce security/safety rules and regulations. Ensure company property is not accidentally left in public or inappropriate areas.Responds to a variety of incidents that may involve aggressive individual(s) and gives obedience and protection commands to K9 as situation dictates.Assess both the physical and emotional needs of patients, families and visitors to prevent assaultive incidents. Use verbal de-escalation and clinical skills to intervene and assist with disruptive clients; provide both patient watch and special staff support in Inpatient/Staff areas; provide external patient watch support for all clinics and satellite facilitates as assigned. Provide extensive patient watches for suicidal/homicidal patients and watches for families.Exposes, introduces and manages the canine in a variety of environments. May use the canine to assist with a variety of patient and/or visitor and/or employee social and therapeutic needs. Participates in public appearances and educational demonstrations as authorized by the Director of Security & Emergency Preparedness.The K9 Security Officer participates in search activities in response to illicit substances.Provides for and ensures the safety and comfort of the canine; provides appropriate rest periods, water, feeding, cooling, etc.As assigned, patrol all satellite and staff parking lots to ensure staff, vehicle and property safety: may provide jump starts, tire changes, transportation support, and crime scene support at any Confluence Health parking lot. Provide 24/7 support for weather disasters/emergencies providing transportation support for staff as needed.Conduct active Security patrols of facilities and grounds; look for physical/environmental safety hazards such as broken lights, spills, broken doors; document, report and take needed steps to insure prompt repairs.Respond to all Confluence Health Codes as appropriate (especially: Gray, Silver, Amber Alert, External and Internal Triage); work with other staff as a team and as appropriate, assign/assume roles, document events, and coordinate event debrief; participate/create response and follow-up plan with Security Services and medical teams. Support and collaborate with local law enforcement and public agencies, within the limits and boundaries of Confluence Health policies and procedures and in accordance with laws and regulations (i.e., RCWs, JCS, DOH, and other regulatory bodies).Monitor Confluence Health CCTV cameras when available (24/7). Respond and when appropriate, dispatch response teams for all duress/emergent calls.Document activities consistent with current reporting standards, using report forms, Daily Activity Logs and other documents as appropriate. Complete and turn in required Security Services Incident Reports, Daily Activity Logs, follow up reports and any other required paperwork daily or as directed. Maintains logs and documentation for the canine, including care and maintenance and training logs.Perform assorted duties, including but not limited to: door locks/unlocks, assorted alarms, recovering/assisting with lost and found and patient property as appropriate, monitor RV parking, etc.Maintain confidentiality of all patient information and HIPAA requirements. Refrain from gossip and speak in low tones in all appropriate areas.Communicate, collaborate and perform security duties in a courteous and respectful manner to achieve overall CH Security Services goals and objectives. Provides an atmosphere in which all employees and visitors know that Confluence Health responds to and cares about their needs; provides a courteous, respectful and pleasant interaction with each employee and visitor as perceived from their point of view; presents a good image of the Clinic. Communicates in a manner that is open, honest and responsive in all situations; to the extent authorized, provides information regarding the facility and surrounding area as requested by visitors.Greet all visitors, patients, staff and physicians in a courteous, respectful and professional manner at all times. Respond to all requests for service in a professional, helpful and constructive manner.Participate and successfully complete all training as required by the Security Services Department and Confluence Health. Maintains proficiency through regular training with canine and maintains associated training records.Regards the canine as a member of the family unit and is responsible for the canine 24/7. Provides safe and friendly interactions with the family unit. Must consider removal of pets from the home. Home environment and enclosure must be suitable for the canine.This position works as part of the security team and will be assigned per the needs of Confluence Health, and at the direction of the Security Services Manager, to include assignment at any Confluence Health location or duty station.Maintains competency and fulfills the role as a Bedside Assistant when needed.Required to maintain active Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.Other duties as assigned.Demonstrate Standards of Behavior and adhere to the Code of Conduct in all aspects of job performance at all times.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Three (3) years law enforcement, security, or military experience OR two (2) years healthcare security experience.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Pass a basic background check (no felony convictions).
- Valid drivers license. Must have a driving record acceptable to Risk Management.
- AHSS Advanced certification within 1 year of hire.
- CIT certification or equivalent.
- MOAB training or equivalent (as determined by Security Services Manager).
- Strong documentation, reading and writing skills, including basic computer skills.
- Ability to work in a stressful and possibly disruptive or dangerous environment.
- Ability to drive a large van, truck, and/or other fleet vehicles.
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in English, in written, oral, or diagrammatic form and take appropriate initiative to accomplish organizational goals.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively at various social levels and across diverse cultures, including interaction with staff, patients, visitors and others.
- Successful completion of approved K9 Handlers course within three (3) months of assignment (unless otherwise indicated by Security Director) to K9 Officer position and successful maintenance of relevant certifications and training.
- The handling officer must ensure that their family is fully apprised of the nature of the program and consents to your participation in it. The officer must agree to allow the canine to live in their residence and submit such arrangements to family members. Family members do not have allergies or conditions to dogs. Inspection of the handler residence to determine suitability for this assignment, fenced yard, and suitable space for the K9.
- Ability to lift and carry the weight of an average canine (100 pounds) while navigating routine duties (fences, tables, chairs, stretchers, etc.).
- CPR certification.
