Incomplete applications may not be accepted. Description A DPS Security Officer is a non-sworn position within the agency. The position assists with routine and emergency calls to DPS for service, assistance, and guidance. Typical duties include assisting the sworn officers with patrolling the campus, assisting with dispatcher duties, monitoring radio and phone traffic, and assisting with locking and unlocking doors, buildings, and other facilities. This position assists with parking and traffic duties and helps stranded motorists with jump-starts and related calls for service. Job Duties
- Patrol the campus in vehicles, golf carts, and on foot.
- Assist with traffic direction and parking lot assignments.
- Multi-task simultaneously to include talking on the telephone and two-way radio.
- Complete daily dispatcher's log of calls received and dispatches appropriate personnel to requested locations via RMS software.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to recall details in emergency situations.
- Monitor University fire alarm system.
- Must be able to manage email communications as this is the primary form of communication on campus.
- Must be NCIC certified within six months of employment and maintain said certification throughout employment.
- Must be willing to learn law enforcement-related data systems, with preference given for RMS, LETS, and ALACOP.
- Must be willing to acquire useful skills for other campus law enforcement-related systems such as T2, PowerDMS, PowerDetails, Genetec camera systems, and fire alarm panel operations.
- Must keep all police matters strictly confidential.
- Communicate effectively with the public during routine and difficult situations.
- Assist the shift supervisor, as needed.
- Maintain liaison with university officials, community police, and fire departments to promote the safety and security of the University.
- Provide location directions to citizens as required.
- Monitor the National Weather Service radio for severe weather warnings and report threatening weather conditions, including assisting with emergency notifications as needed.
- Must be able to receive and understand instructions or orders from supervisors to carry out daily shift requirements.
- Review scheduled campus activities.
- Attending all training and maintaining continuing education credits as required.
- Provide patrol units with information regarding persons, vehicles, and property.
- Alert officers and shift supervisors of all unusual situations or other situations as required.
- Must be able to utilize the phonetic alphabet, ten series and other radio codes in order to communicate with officers in the field.
- Assist Public Safety Administrative Assistant III with clerical duties.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the Chief.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Possess a current Alabama driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
- Proficient communication skills, both oral and written.
- Possess the ability to speak articulately to individuals and the ability to read and comprehend correspondence, manuals, journals, letters, memoranda, policies, directives, and signs.
- Possess the ability to hear verbal communication and radio/electronic and telephone messages/signals.
- Must have no felony convictions or convictions for crimes of moral turpitude.
- The position involves considerable overtime and shift work.
- Possess the ability to learn radio codes and terminology in order to communicate clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and to maintain confidentiality where appropriate.
- Position involves extensive sitting, standing, stooping, and walking.
- Position will require working various shifts and holidays as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior law enforcement or security experience, preferably in an educational setting.
- Prior NCIC Certification.
