Job Title: Senior Accountant, Leases & ComplianceLocation: Remote (PST or MST) or Hybrid (Depending on geographical location to our HQ in Tustin, CA) Reports to: Senior Accounting ManagerDepartment: FinancePosition Overview:At JustFoodForDogs, we are passionate about improving the quality of life for pets through nutrition. The Senior Accountant, Leases & Compliance will play a critical role in managing and overseeing accounting compliance functions for the company. This position is responsible for ensuring accurate reporting and compliance with various tax regulations, ASC 842 lease management, preparing financial reports, and supporting the accounting department with various compliance-related tasks. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills in tax compliance, fixed assets, leases, and accounting practices, with a keen eye for detail and regulatory updates.Key Responsibilities:
- Sales Tax Compliance:
- Prepare, review, and file sales and use tax returns in multiple jurisdictions.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of sales tax liabilities.
- Respond to state and local tax authorities' inquiries and audits.
- Monitor changes in sales tax regulations and ensure the company is in compliance.
- Lease Accounting and Fixed Assets:
- Review leases, prepare monthly ASC 842 rent entries and schedules, complete reconciliations, and coordinate with other departments on new lease activity.
- Oversee and ensure proper accounting of fixed assets, including acquisitions, transfers, and disposals.
- Prepare and analyze monthly fixed asset reconciliations and roll-forward reports.
- Compliance & Regulatory Reporting:
- Assist in ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable laws and regulations.
- Maintain accurate and compliant financial records related to taxes, leases, and other accounting functions.
- Prepare reports and schedules for internal and external audits.
- Assist with regulatory filings and other tax forms.
- Other Accounting Compliance Tasks:
- Support month-end close processes, including reconciling general ledger accounts related to leases, fixed assets and taxes.
- Provide guidance and support to junior accountants on compliance matters.
- Monitor and improve internal controls to ensure compliance with accounting policies and procedures.
- Stay updated on changes to tax laws and accounting standards and communicate updates to the team.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure accuracy and compliance of financial data.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
- CPA or equivalent certification is preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in accounting, with a focus on tax compliance and lease accounting.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, ASC 842 lease regulations, and sales tax compliance.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience in the retail industry.
- Familiarity with multi-state sales tax compliance and filings.
- ASC 842 lease accounting experience preferred.
- Experience working with lease accounting software (NetAsset preferred) and ERP software (e.g., SAP, Oracle)
