This is a provisional appointment.

Brief Job Description:

Works under the direct supervision of the Animal Shelter Manager and the Director of Animal Care and Control for the City of Boston. Guarantees that all animals are cared for and treated humanely. The Sr. Animal Room Attendant will also be responsible for performing clerical tasks, such as answering the shelter's telephones in the absence of Administrative staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures all animals are provided with the appropriate amount of food and water.
  • Follows established disease control and daily cleaning protocols.
  • Cleans animal cages, quarters, equipment, and utensils.
  • Assists with animal intake and evaluations.
  • Creates and maintains necessary animal records.
  • Assists personnel in making tests and performs routine clerical duties such as covering the shelter phone calls in the absence of the administrative staff.
  • May, at times, supervise the Animal Room Attendants.
  • Performs related work as required.

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to animal dander, debris, odors, approved cleaning solutions, airborne particles, dust, and zoonotic diseases.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions when working outside with animals.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Three (3) years of experience with handling animals.
  • General knowledge of office procedures, filing, and record keeping.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Calendar, Docs, and emails, and Chameleon preferred.
  • Ability to safely handle, restrain, walk and exercise animals of all sizes.
  • Ability to safely work with animals that may be injured, unruly, vicious, or otherwise dangerous.
  • Tetanus and rabies (pre-exposure) inoculations are required or must be waived.
  • Ability to work well and communicate effectively with the public, employees, and volunteers.
  • Ability to routinely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Must have and maintain a current Massachusetts Drivers License.
  • Requires frequent and/or prolonged walking, bending, lifting, and stooping.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
