Job Description :

The 4-H Program Leader (PL) guides CCE's 4-H Youth Development Program, a flagship program of Cornell Human Ecology (CHE) and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell University, and the national Cooperative Extension System. The PL position is a core leadership position in CCE requiring a high level of collaboration with the leadership in Cornell Human Ecology (CHE), and Extension Administration in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). In addition, the 4-H PL must engage effectively and proactively with the field- based Association structure of the CCE System.

With a commitment to evidence-based education and strong research program partnerships, the 4-H Program Leader provides guidance and vision for the 4-H program in New York State, in collaboration with local Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) 4-H staff, faculty researchers, and extension leaders in both colleges and the broader University. The Program Leader supervises and supports the NYS 4-H professionals within the Bronfenbrenner Center for Translational Research (BCTR) in Human Ecology and oversees the effort to support the county based 4- H field staff who implement 4-H programming in the communities of New York state. In addition, the 4-H State Leaders is the primary point of connection with the 4-H program leadership at the National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and National 4-H Council.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in a related field.
  • Five years of experience relevant to the responsibilities of the position, with at least three years of leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience conducting research and education programs in youth development.
  • Outstanding communication and negotiation skills, and ability to build consensus among individuals with diverse points of view.
  • Knowledge of and leadership experience in Cooperative Extension, 4-H, or other youth-serving organizations.
  • Knowledge of youth development and youth organizations.
  • Demonstrated accomplishments as a visionary leader and administrator with ability to set priorities and move program initiatives forward to completion.
  • Ability to empower and motivate staff to reach program goals.
  • Ability to secure external funds to support innovative programs.
  • Ability to conduct and utilize youth development research on both content and process, in planning, implementing, and evaluating effective programs.
  • Ability to communicate with and motivate a wide range of people, including professionals, volunteers, community leaders, business leaders and faculty.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD or other terminal degree.
  • Understanding of academic institutions and of factors that influence state and local politics and decision making.
  • Demonstrated ability to administer the financial, human resource and operational aspects of a statewide program.
