The Sr. Global Process Safety Engineer has a close connection to the sites with focus on the execution of Stepan's initiatives to enhance Process Safety performance. This role provides technical expertise, has a holistic view of the plants capabilities and opportunities, and oversees Process Safety programs.
Process Safety Management
- Support sites with Stepan standards and procedures implementation and maintenance
- Provide feedback and training on new standards
- Participate in RAGAGEPS by external committees (API, NFPA, CCPS)
- Provide Process Safety expertise in reactive chemistry including emergency venting and safe handling of flammable liquids and combustible dusts
- Help sites implement OSHA PSM by sharing best practices, identifying regulatory gaps, and proposing solutions/tools to address them
Compliance and Auditing
- Participate in OSHA PSM, EPA RMP and internal audits
- Provide technical support in PSM/RMP closing recommendations
- Lead closure of critical findings and ensure solutions meet safety requirements
Training and Development
- Provide input to the development and review of the annual training program (PHA participant training, PHA leaders training, Sulfonation, Reactive Chemistry, etc.)
- Act as trainer and support training execution
Incident Investigation
- Lead incident investigations for Type III Process Safety Incidents or Types I and II incidents with high potential or high complexity
- Ensure timely closure of recommendations and thorough root cause analysis
Risk Assessment
- Perform quality check on PHAs led by others ensuring comprehensiveness, solid basis, and adherence to CORP-32 – Process Hazards Analysis Standard and good practices related to the execution of PHAs (Hazop and LOPA)
- Engage contractors for Quantitative Risk Assessments
- Promote the use of CORP-54 - EHS&S Risk Identification and Assessment to ensure proper communication of risks throughout the organization
Continuous Improvement
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement in process safety
- Review Capital Project scopes for compliance and support their development
Qualifications
- 10+ years experience (5+ years' experience as a Process Engineer, 5+ years' experience leading process safety management in chemical, refinery, pharmaceutical or manufacturing industries)
- Experience managing process safety across multiple sites; International experience is a plus.
- HAZOP leadership and LOPA participation
- Electrical Classification for Hazardous Locations
- Participation in Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA)
- Reactive chemistry and definition basis of emergency venting sizing
- Flammables and Combustible Dusts Safety
- PSM Audition process minimally as an auditor
- Incident Investigation techniques
- Regulatory aspects of OSHA PSM and EPA RMP
- RAGAGEPS such as API and NFPA standards
- Trainer in Process Engineering or Process Safety matters
Preferred Qualifications:
- Fire Protection Systems
- LOPA Leadership
- Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
- Facility Siting and Human Factors Assessments
- CCPS Risk Based Process Safety (elements implementation, system management)
- Certified Process Safety Professional (CPSP) or similar certifications
Education
Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering
Pay Range: $100,000 - $150,000
The salary range for this position is determined by considering a variety of factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, and the location of the position.
