Under general supervision, performs various City infrastructure semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance and repair tasks. Operates construction equipment for wastewater and storm drain maintenance collection systems and street maintenance. Provides work direction and training to less experienced maintenance crew members. This position is a semi-skilled class within the Public Works Department and reports to the Public Works Supervisor; performs related duties, as required.Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Operate various motorized equipment and vehicles including but not limited to, combination rodding/vacuum trucks, CCTV pipeline inspection equipment, dump trucks, and water trucks.
- Operate light to heavy equipment, loaders, jackhammers, pavement breakers, and backhoes.
- Use concrete cutting and breaking equipment.
- Perform concrete and asphalt repair work.
- Repair streets, sidewalks, and raise manholes to finish grade.
- Maintain sewer pipes, laterals, and manholes.
- Fabricate and perform welding repairs.
- Maintain and repair pump stations.
- Clean and inspect sewers and storm drains, catch basins, dry wells, and parkway drains.
- Develop traffic control plans and install traffic control equipment in accordance with approved traffic control plans and the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CAMUTCD).
- Perform weed abatement, remove trash, remove graffiti from walls, signs, sidewalks, and streets.
- Maintain and repair electrical, plumbing, irrigation systems, and equipment.
- Paint buildings and various infrastructure items.
- Prepare estimates of materials and equipment, procure tools, materials, and supplies for work projects.
- Maintain a variety of work records including inventories of materials and supplies.
- Sweep paved areas and keep trash from condemnation of run off to rivers and lakes.
- Grade shoulders, ditches, and unpaved roads.
- Clean and maintain drainage channels to prevent flooding and pollution.
- Operate, maintain, and repair traffic control equipment.
- Respond to Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) events.
- Assist with traffic and pedestrian control, restricting flow of an SSO event from entering the Storm Drain Collection System, cleaning and sanitizing affected areas.
- Respond to non-duty-hour emergencies including wind, earthquakes, and traffic accidents.
- May act as a Lead Worker of a crew, when needed and perform related work, as required.
- Attend a variety of meetings including employee safety meetings and training sessions.
- Assist with City special event set-up; may help staff information booths and provide information to the public.
- May serve on-call Standby for after hours and emergency situations.
- Safely operate City vehicles and equipment.
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High school diploma OR GED equivalent AND two years public works maintenance and repair operations experience, which includes: traffic control, sanitary sewer and storm drain system installation and pump station maintenance. LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess a minimum of a valid California Class C driver's license upon hire and maintain throughout the length of employment with the City of Victorville.
- May be required to possess a valid California Class A or B Commercial driver's license with
endorsements. (Ability to obtain a Class A or B commercial driver's License within 9 months upon request) and maintain throughout employment with the City of Victorville.
- May require an Applicator certification; California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Grade 1 certification; Flagger certification; Confined Space Entry certification; Hazardous Materials certification; or Forklift Operator certification.
Work is performed in both an indoor and outdoor environment. Exposure to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, excessive noise, and wildlife. May be required to enter sewer and storm drainage systems, confined spaces such as manholes, pump stations, and catch basins. May be required to climb ladders; work in trenches and wear and fall restraint harness or respirator, in confined spaces. May be required to stand and/or walk, stoop and bend for long periods of time. Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds. Exposure to wide temperature variations, noise, vibrations, fumes, grease, machinery and its moving parts, odors, and dust. Physical demands require bending, stooping, and frequently lifting moderately heavy and heavy objects. Incumbent must be able to see and hear in the normal range with or without correction and communicate verbally and in written form with great facility and must be able to be understood. Incumbent may be required to respond to emergencies after regular working hours and on weekends, and must be willing to work an irregular schedule, which may include weekends, holidays, evenings, and/or varying shifts.
