The Mechanical Engineering department leads in the mechanical hardware design, development, and production of weapons systems. We use state-of-the-art tools, processes, and technology, with capabilities encompassing a broad range of technical disciplines, including product engineering, manufacturing, technical services, materials engineering, analysis and test, rapid hardware development/builds and configuration and data management documentation.

The Agile Hardware Solutions (AHS) department is responsible for improving the cost competitiveness of the work products developed by MPT through both workforce efficiency and product affordability optimization.

The Agile Hardware Solutions (AHS) Department is seeking a Senior Mechanical Casting Producibility Engineer, located in Tucson, AZ (Hybrid)

The Mechanical Producibility Engineer is part of the Agile Hardware Solutions' Producibility Team within the Mechanical Products Team.

Producibility Engineers work directly with Engineering Teams, as well as Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain peers, and suppliers to implement mechanical producibility improvements on new and emerging programs as well as upgrades to existing programs. Early engagement in the conceptual stage and throughout the development process will ensure that our designs are optimized with respect to methods of manufacture.

What You Will Do

  • Work with the hardware design team to influence the producibility of casting designs leveraging expertise.

  • Perform producibility assessments and lead Design for Manufacturing & Assembly engagements to drive cost out of the design

  • Support critical casting suppliers in the understanding of the product's technical requirements.

  • Assess suppliers for their capability and readiness and offer support to ensure success in meeting contractual deliveries.

  • Troubleshoot processes at suppliers as required to resolve barriers and improve yield.

  • Engage in supplier development of strategic suppliers.

  • Travel frequently to support casting suppliers.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Material Science or related discipline, and 5 years of relevant professional experience.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical product design and/or manufacturing

  • Experience with “near net shape” technologies including investment, sand, and/or die casting processes

  • Experience implementing Design for Manufacturing and Assembly

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.

Qualifications We Value

  • Knowledgeable in the principles and application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Recent experience and working knowledge of material forming and fabrication capabilities and technologies such as forging, welding, brazing, injection molding or additive manufacturing

  • Recent experience with other “near net shape” technologies such as the forging processes for ferrous and non-ferrous materials

  • Experience with ASME Y14.8 and the engineering product definition of castings or other near net shape parts

  • Experience with classification and inspection of castings

The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
