The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state. The NYISO's Operations department invites applications for a full-time Senior System Operator Training Engineer. As a System Operator Training Engineer, you will serve as an expert on dispatch and control applications of the NYISO real time system; operate the NYISO Integrated System Simulator (ISS) in cooperation with the System Operator Trainers. The Simulator Engineer provides the software, data management, and display support for the ISS, interacting with the vendor, NYISO Power System Applications Engineering and the NYISO IT support departments. ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, develop, and evaluate simulation exercises to support NYISO initial and continuing training programs utilizing a Systematic Approach to Training in coordination with other members of the training group.
- Design Load Forecast, Generator Bid, and Transaction bid data that is consistent with desired conditions for Simulator Training.
- Develop and maintain Equipment Outage Schedular records and Security Analysis cases to mimic what operations would expect to see on the control room floor.
- Manually adjust Phase angle regulators, generator output, system topology, and other various aspects of the system to remain consistent with desired conditions for simulation
- Develop and maintain a process to rapidly establish base cases from real time conditions.
- Manage the configuration, connectivity and dependency relationships among system components: hardware, software and networks associated with ISS operation.
- Identify and recommend improvements to system modeling to enhance the accuracy, efficiency and timeliness of simulations. Identify issues within the network model and work with Power Systems Application Engineering to improve the model and tools.
- Develop and maintain documentation of the basic operating procedures for conducting simulations, and provide training to Operator Trainers on simulator operations.
- Participate in NERC, NPCC and industry working groups and forums in the area of simulator operation and training.
- Support integration of processes, tools and displays into system operations through participation in projects of varying scope including User Acceptance Testing (UAT) utilizing the simulator environment.
- Support Operations Engineering by performing simulation analysis in support of engineering studies.
- Coach trainers on operations and simulator use
