The City of Pierre seeks an enthusiastic individual to join our team in making Pierre one of the best places to live, work, and visit. Provides services in the water and wastewater departments by repairing and maintaining sanitary and storm sewer mains. A CCTV van including computer applications to video and inspect sanitary and storm sewer lines. You'll operate a Vactor truck to clean sewer lines, storm lines, lift stations and multiple structures located around the city. Performs smoke testing, bypass pumping and flow monitoring Sewer Collection Maintenance Technician Wastewater JOB SUMMARY This position performs technical duties in the maintenance and repair of the sanitary and storm sewer systems. MAJOR DUTIES
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains sewer, and storm sewer mains; installs taps.
  • Collects bacteriological and pH samples.
  • Responds to emergency situations, including after-hours emergencies.
  • Operates backhoe, excavator, trencher, vactor truck, dump truck and other equipment.
  • Sets up and operates transit level, pipe laser, and online tools to set grades.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on tools and equipment.
  • Assembles and repairs catch basins, storm leads, lateral tops, and manholes.
  • Installs traffic control devices at work sites.
  • Attend safety meetings and classes.
  • Locates underground utilities.
  • Attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of work safety principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of sanitary sewer and storm sewer system maintenance principles.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of job-related tools and equipment.
  • Skill in the collection and analysis of water samples.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The Water Superintendent assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. GUIDELINES Guidelines include department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of the city's storm sewer and sanitary sewer systems. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of system operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY This position has direct supervision over assigned seasonal personnel. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class B commercial driver's license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Qualifications A Class I Waste Water Collection certification from the State of SD Board of Operator Certification after 18 months of employment. Must have or be able to obtain a Class B CDL with Tanker Endorsement.
