EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:High school diploma or GED preferred, but not required. Education and/or work experience commensurate with the duties and responsibilities required. The individual must have/obtain yearly certification in first aid, CPR and a Food Handler's card.

SCOPE OF POSITION:The Shelter Advocate (SA) is responsible for the safety and security of those who are receiving shelter. Treating all those receiving shelter with dignity and understanding, the SA enforces policies and procedures and provides crisis intervention with residents. Any special or unusual concern is to be brought to the immediate attention of the supervisor.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Interact directly with domestic violence survivors and their children living in shelter.2. Maintain ongoing professional relationship in all interpersonal contacts. (Note: Confidentiality Requirements). Uses strength-based perspective in all interactions with clients and staff.3. Answer multi-line telephones and deal appropriately with visitors to the facility.4. Provide information and referrals, crisis intervention and support to incoming contacts.5. Receive and route inquiries and messages, inter-office notes and program materials as appropriate.6. Assist in maintaining client files by logging appropriate information and incidents occurring during shift.7. Maintain front desk materials in an appropriate manner.8. Coordination with co-worker, perform security and fire watches throughout the building.9. Responsible, along with co-worker, for meal preparation as needed. (A food handler's card is required.)10. Responsible, along with co-worker, for light cleaning duties and room preparation.11. Receive, log, receipt, sort and store incoming donations and fees in the appropriate manner.12. Be familiar with and enforce neighborhood agreements, zoning constraints and funding contracts related to the program and program rules/policies.13. Attend all staff meetings as assigned.14. Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:- Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis- Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead- Ability to operate telephone- Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. (usually file boxes- Ability to access and produce information from a computer- Ability to understand written information
