THE WOMEN'S CENTERJOB DESCRIPTIONShelter Advocate (Weekend) The Women's Center in Waukesha, WI is looking to hire a full-time Weekend Shelter Advocate to provide advocacy and support to individuals and families impacted by domestic abuse, sexual assault/abuse and Human Trafficking. For our team to compassionately and expertly care for our clients, we provide thorough training as well as consistent and ongoing support!A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A Shelter AdvocateIn this advocacy position, no two days are alike! Both in the shelter and on the 24-Hour Hotline you engage in active listening to ensure all survivors have a knowledgeable, trauma-informed, and empathetic person to support them in accessing resources and services. These include crisis intervention, safety planning, emotional support, advocacy, and providing appropriate referrals. You help victims receive immediate support by working with local hospitals and Law Enforcement. In the shelter, you ensure the client's basic needs are met by stocking fun and nutritious food and other necessary items, keeping the group spaces clean, and toys and self-care items readily available. Some days you may be putting away donations while other days you might be engaged in a lively game of charades with children residing in the shelter. QUALIFICATIONS FOR A SHELTER ADVOCATEHS diploma or a related field OR professional experience working with trauma survivors Knowledge about sexual assault, and domestic violenceStrong advocacy, listening, and crisis intervention skillsProficiency with Microsoft Office SuiteValid Wisconsin driver's license and proof of insuranceAbility to lift up to 25 poundsBilingual abilities would be a plus.
