Our emergency shelter is dedicated to offering a welcoming and secure environment for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.As our Shelter Coordinator, you will play a critical role in creating a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for clients in our Emergency Shelter. In this hands-on position, you will oversee daily operations, leading a team of Shelter Monitors to ensure high-quality care and seamless adherence to shelter policies. This role goes beyond routine oversight - you'll collaborate with our Regional Social Services Director to recruit, train, and develop Shelter Monitors, setting the foundation for a compassionate and skilled team. Your growing knowledge of community resources and life skills education will empower our clients to take meaningful steps toward stability and independence. With occasional coverage of shifts, you'll stay closely connected to the needs of our clients and contribute directly to our mission.Shifts: Primary schedule is anticipated to be Monday-Friday 9:00am-5:00pm, but will be determined by Regional Social Services Director based on shelter needs. Ability to work flexible hours, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays to cover gaps in staffing is required.Status: Full-time non-exempt, 40 hours/weekKey Responsibilities:
- Oversee day-to-day shelter activities, ensuring a safe and supportive environment.
- Create and maintain a welcoming, stable environment for all shelter residents. Address any issues related to safety, security, or shelter policies.
- Enforce all shelter policies and procedures for programs and services by always ensuring safety is being maintained and intervening when necessary to resolve issues.
- Respond to client concerns, providing emotional support and referrals for services as appropriate.
- Maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and health standards throughout the facility.
- Ensure that the needs of residents are met, including basic care, safety, and hygiene.
- Complete documentation and assessments, ensuring client files are maintained, accurate, and compliant within the Homeless Management System (HMIS), as well as the Emergency Shelter's funding sources and The Salvation Army's expectations.
- Provide guidance and leadership to a team of Shelter Monitors.
- Assist the Regional Social Services Director with recruiting, hiring, and evaluation of Shelter Monitors.
- Assist with the intake and discharge processes, including completing necessary paperwork and welcoming individuals into the shelter.
- Coordinate staffing schedules, always ensuring adequate staff coverage. This includes performing shelter monitor duties during gaps in staffing coverage.
What are We Looking For?
- Associate's degree required. Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field preferred.
- Two (2) years of related work experience in residential or mental health setting.
- One (1) year of supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience in shelter or residential programs, ideally with a focus on vulnerable populations.
- Ability to foster a supportive, safe environment and remain calm in challenging situations.
- Knowledge of community resources and an interest in life skills education.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to treating clients and colleagues with respect.
- Compassionate and nonjudgmental attitude towards individuals experiencing homelessness.
- Ability to handle challenging situations with composure and professionalism.
- Basic computer skills to assist with data entry and record keeping.
- Ability to work flexible hours including some nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
