Job Description :

WHAT ARE SHERIFF'S RESERVES?

(Umatilla County Sheriff's Office)

The purpose of the Sheriff's Reserves is to support and supplement the Criminal Division of the Umatilla County Sheriff's Office. The Reserves operate under the policy and procedures as set forth in the UCSO Policy and Procedures Manual.

The UCSO Reserves program is a volunteer program and is non-paid. The program requires a minimum of 16 hours per month, but more is expected from all members. Reserves must attend the Reserve Academy (or equivalent) which would include Civil liabilities and a demonstrated proficiency with firearms before being authorized to carry a firearm. Carrying a badge and/or a firearm off duty is prohibited without the written permission of the Sheriff. All members are required to attend the basic Reserves academy, and other training when available, if no previous LE experience.

To maintain the highest standard all applicants must pass standardized POST test administered by Sheriff's Office. The applicants will have background checks including traffic and criminal records, medical and a psychological test. Personal contact with references will be made for more information.

All new Reserves are on minimum one-year probation and must complete a Reserves Academy before being upgraded to a Regular Reserves position. Recruit and Regular Reserves work with other officers at all times.

Reserves may make it to Solo Reserves status after the required hours and training has been accomplished. (Can be done in 2-3 years)

The Reserves Program is a self-supporting organization, which gains its entire funding through security work. The bulk of that work is done during the Pendleton Round-Up and Hermiston Pro Rodeo. Security work is done only for Non-Profit organizations.

The Reserves Fund pays for uniforms, equipment, ammunition, supplies, and vehicles used by the Reserves. The individual Reserve is responsible for his/her own firearms, duty belt and other miscellaneous items. (This could exceed $1000.00)

The UCSO Sheriff's Reserves are a group of individuals used to supplement and enhance the regular Criminal Division Deputies, not replace them. We are always under the command and control of the Sheriff of Umatilla County.
