Description:

A Steel Fabrication Shop Lead has a pivotal role within the manufacturing environment and is tasked with overseeing the daily operations of the shop floor. This individual is responsible for ensuring the safety and efficiency of all fabrication activities, managing a team of skilled workers, and maintaining the highest standards of quality. The Shop Lead must possess a deep understanding of metal properties, fabrication processes, and welding techniques. They are expected to read and interpret fabrication drawings, allocate resources effectively, and troubleshoot any issues that arise during the fabrication process. Additionally, the Shop Lead plays a crucial role in training new employees, enforcing strict safety protocols, and optimizing workflow to increase productivity. Effective communication skills are essential, as the Shop Lead must coordinate between various departments, report to higher management, and communicate with other shifts. With a focus on craftsmanship and precision, the Shop Lead ensures that all fabricated components meet the necessary specifications and quality benchmarks.

Responsibilities/Tasks of role:

  • Oversee daily operations within the fabrication shop.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and maintain a clean work environment.
  • Manage the maintenance of equipment and machinery.
  • Understand the operation of a variety of tools and machinery, including welders, cranes, CNC machines, and mobile equipment.
  • Train and guide team members on proper procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Conduct quality control checks to ensure products meet required specifications.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure smooth workflow and timely completion of projects.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the shop floor team, fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Monitor inventory levels and order materials and supplies as needed.
  • Implement continuous improvement strategies to enhance production efficiency and product quality.
  • Address and resolve any issues or conflicts that arise within the shop.
  • Ensure the accuracy of BOLs and receiving paperwork.

  • Actively attend daily shift turnover meetings and communicate the status to the incoming shift.
  • Work with the General / Plant Manager to administer company personnel policy, including progressive discipline.
  • Operate overhead cranes and forklifts.
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Previously demonstrated leadership qualities.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, and basic maintenance.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control requirements, and other techniques for maximizing productivity.
  • Knowledge of inputs, outputs, raw materials, waste, quality control, costs, and techniques for maximizing the manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
  • Ability to use electronic devices such as iPad or tablet to complete work.
  • Exceptional communication skills, writing skills, interpersonal skills, and ethical mindset.
  • Adept at problem-solving and conflict resolution.
  • Basic mathematic skills are required.
  • Ability to pass a background check, drug screen, and physical.
