Position will remain open until filled Starting hourly wage: $21.54 - $26.02 (DOE) Job Summary The primary function of an employee in this class is to maintain and repair all County Fleet Department and contract vehicles and equipment. This position supervises inmate workers when required. Key Responsibilities Fleet and Equipment Maintenance * Perform general vehicle maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work on all fleet vehicles, contract vehicles, and other related equipment * Perform preventative maintenance, including oil changes, brake jobs, tire rotations, and alignments * Perform repairs on hydraulic systems, drive trains, suspension systems, hoses and belts, steering systems, heating and air conditioning systems, ventilation systems, and emissions * Perform troubleshooting and repair work on sophisticated and technical emergency equipment associated with public safety Fabrication and Welding * Weld and fabricate equipment, parts, shields, gun racks, etc. * Enhance police vehicles, including installation and wiring all lighting, electronics, and communication equipment, and related modifications Teamwork and Public Service * Work cooperatively and constructively with fellow workers and members of the public to provide public service of the highest quality and quantity Other Duties * Collect and preserve mechanical evidence from vehicles for reconstruction purposes * Perform all work duties and activities following County policies, procedures, and safety practices and in accordance with automotive industry standards * Perform other duties as assigned Qualifications Skills and Abilities * Familiarity with emergency vehicle up-fitting and police car fabrication * Proficient in the operation, repair, and maintenance of heavy equipment, hydraulic systems, and automotive systems (engines, electrical, and drive trains) * Skilled in welding (electric and acetylene) and component fabrication * Knowledge of safety practices with air-powered equipment, lifts, hoists, and tire breakdown equipment * Proficient in using personal computers and software for maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs * Use diagnostic and electronic equipment for repairs * Skilled in operating mechanical tools, heavy equipment, and vehicles * Ability to follow instructions and comprehend repair manuals * Demonstrate integrity and inventiveness in assigned tasks * Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with the public and colleagues * Ability to perform a wide variety of tasks with accuracy and efficiency under time-sensitive deadlines Special Qualifications * Must possess and maintain an Idaho driver's license * Air Conditioner Recovery Certification* * Radar Certification Equipment license* * DEQ, A, B, Tank Operator Certification* * Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification* preferred * Must successfully complete a background investigation * Must be able to work on call after normal business hours to respond to emergencies *certification can be acquired during tenure of employment Education and Experience * High school diploma or GED equivalency is required and two (2) years of specialized coursework in automotive maintenance and repair * Four (4) plus years of technically related experience preferred * Equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered Essential Physical Abilities * Clear speech with or without an accommodation, to effectively convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly and/or quickly * Sufficient clarity of hearing with or without reasonable accommodation to enable the employee to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information * Visual acuity, with or without an accommodation, to read instructions, review and organize documents * Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate a variety of automotive shop tools including hand and power tools, electronic diagnostic and related specialized equipment, and adjust equipment * Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, agility, strength, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to work under vehicles, in confined spaces, remove and replace parts for repair and replacement, and work in an automotive shop environment * Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds Disclaimer: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the primary job responsibilities satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation.
