Sign Technician II
Classification Title: Sign Technician II Department: Public Works & Engineering Pay Grade: 10 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt General Statement of Job Under general supervision, this position performs skilled tasks primarily in the design, installation and repair of traffic control signage within city limits. All task or work performed will follow standards outlined in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)/FHWA/FDOT. Specific Duties and Responsibilities Duties include using specialized computers, scanners, software, plotters, and other processes to create standard or customized signs. Types of signs produced include traffic signs and other exterior signs, as well as interior building signs such as directional signs, ADA and life safety signs. Types of sign material include aluminum, vinyl, plastic, and wood, among others. Duties involve interaction with the general public, vendors, and/or city staff and officials. Essential Functions: Fabricates, installs, maintains, and repairs various signs within city-maintained roadway, parks, and buildings. This includes Regulatory, Warning, Guide signs and special customized signs within and around city official buildings. Verifies sign location, ID numbers, and size as per cityworks. Basic operation of printing software, printer/laminator, and plotter equipment. Trims shrubbery at/around signage that can cause occlusions/obstructions. Receives and stocks sign material. Ability to interpret simple plans and sketches. Sets up and maintains MOT/traffic control devices to provide safe work zones on roadway. Assist other department crews in providing safe work zones, as needed. Fill out work orders and other paperwork and maintains files and records. Provides instruction and work guidance to Sign Tech I. Additional functions: Assist the Pavement Markings crew in preparation, installation, and maintenance of pavement markings. Ex. prep equipment, load material, mix paint, fill kettle pots. Receive cross training within division to gain knowledge, skills, and proficiency in all traffic division operations. Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment. Remains on call for emergencies 24 hours per day as scheduled. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education and Training Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by two (2) years of experience in the installation and maintenance of signs as it relates to the traffic industry or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities for success in the target position. Pavement Marking knowledge a plus but not required. Must possess an IMSA Level II Sign and Pavement Marking Technician certification. Must possess or ability to obtain Safety/work zone certification (MOT) within 3 months of employment commencement and forklift operator certification within 2 years of employment commencement. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Class B CDL driver's license with air brake endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date. Must possess or ability to obtain the most current FEMA 100, 200, and 700 Incident Command System certifications Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required Skill Requirements: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Public Works and Engineering Department as they pertain to the performance and duties of the Signs/Marking Technician II. Has considerable knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of the City and other governmental agencies. Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has good knowledge and understanding of traffic operations, signage, and applications of the MUTCD Manual. Has good knowledge of the materials and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signs and road striping. Has thorough knowledge of all applicable codes and regulations. Has knowledge of modern office practices and technology. Has the ability to perform required mathematical computations with accuracy and in a timely manner. Has thorough knowledge of the computer and other technical terminology used within the department; has skill in the use of computers for data and word processing, database management and signal programming. Is skilled in applying a responsible attention to detail as necessary in preparing reports and records. Is able to read and interpret a variety of materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Is able to analyze problems that arise on the job and prepare related reports and recommendations. Is able to maintain records accurately. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Is able to use independent judgment in performing routine tasks. Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Is able to aid various departments, supervisors, co-workers and the general public as needed. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Knows how to perform duties in a courteous manner and communicate effectively with a variety of public and private groups as prescribed. Has skill in the care and use of required tools and equipment. Is able to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment. Has knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a vehicle, truck, and a variety of machines and equipment including a computer, telephone, calculator, signal diagnostic and control equipment, fork lift, etc. Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds) and occasionally heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds). Responsibilities: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interaction with internal and external entities with whom the position interacts. Working Conditions: Works indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather. Is capable of working under stressful conditions as required. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. Is able to perform duties in occasionally uncomfortable or hazardous conditions, including extreme heat or cold, machinery hazards, traffic hazards, wetness, humidity, electrical currents, etc. Other: It is understood that every incidental duty connected with operations enumerated in the job description is not always specifically described, and employees, at the discretion of the City, may be required to perform duties not within their job descriptions.
