Job Description:

The Salt Lake City Council Office seeks an experienced Social Media Strategist with a proven record of creating compelling, accessible, and relatable digital content. The ideal candidate is passionate about connecting with the community and thrives as a team player, collaborating effectively with Council members, communications staff, and City departments. They possess a deep understanding of social media best practices and excel at communicating complex local government initiatives in a relatable and accessible way. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is preferred.

This hybrid role requires at least three days per week in the office, with flexibility for remote work. The Social Media Strategist reports to the Director of Public Relations and works closely with the Council's communications team and other City departments to ensure the Council's social media aligns with broader communications and community engagement goals.

This is a full-time, appointed, at-will position without tenure and exempt from the career service system.

This position will be open for 2 weeks and is scheduled to close at EOD Thursday, 11/21/2024 unless it is deemed necessary to leave open. Early application submittal is encouraged.

Position Salary Range:

$68,000 to $78,000 based on qualifications and experience. Higher end of the salary range for candidates with advanced skills, qualifications, and exceptional experience.

Key Responsibilities:

The Social Media Strategist will support the Salt Lake City Council Office by:

+ Social Media Management: Oversee the Council's social media accounts by developing and executing integrated social media strategies across platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, TikTok, Nextdoor, LinkedIn, Threads, and YouTube. Ensure all content reflects the Council's objectives through strategic messaging developed in coordination with the Director of Public Relations and key staff.

+ Content Strategy & Creation: Drive social media strategy, producing high-quality, original content (text, video, graphics, images) that makes complex policy topics accessible to the public. Create engaging, relatable posts that highlight City Council initiatives and promote community participation.

+ Community Engagement & Management: Serve as the community manager across all platforms, building relationships with followers, influencers, and local stakeholders. Respond promptly and accurately to DMs and comments, fostering trust and surfacing sensitive issues to senior leadership as needed.

+ Editorial Calendar & Planning: Plan and manage a social media editorial calendar that balances evergreen and timely content, keeping residents informed and engaged with Council activities, legislative initiatives, and community events.

+ Event Coverage: Attend City and Council events to capture live content, including photography, videography, and real-time updates. Integrate event coverage into the social media calendar to showcase Council involvement and connect with the community.

+ Social Listening & Trend Analysis: Leverage social listening tools to monitor relevant conversations, trends, and emerging issues. Identify engagement opportunities, user-generated content, and seasonal topics that align with the Council's goals.

+ Performance Analytics & Reporting: Track, analyze, and report on social media performance, utilizing data-driven insights to optimize strategies and enhance engagement. Provide regular performance updates to inform future initiatives.

+ Project Coordination: Collaborating with internal teams and Council Members to ensure social media efforts align with the Council's broader objectives, including legislative initiatives and public service campaigns. Collaborate with social media staff across Salt Lake City government departments to ensure cohesive messaging, share resources, and align on social media best practices.

+ Graphic Design & Visual Content: Creating visual assets as needed, including graphics, photos, and videos; basic graphic design skills in tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite are preferred.

+ Accessibility: Ensure all social media content is accessible and inclusive by writing clear, descriptive alt text for visuals, using plain language, and incorporating Spanish translations to broaden content accessibility.

+ Advisory Role: Stay updated on the latest social media trends, best practices, and emerging tools that may be relevant to municipal governments. Advise Council staff on these insights, providing guidance on engagement strategies and innovative approaches to strengthen the Council's online presence.

Minimum Qualifications:

+ Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Business Administration, Public Administration, Public Policy, or a related field, or equivalent years of experience in social media management, content strategy, or digital marketing.

+ Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in social media management, content strategy, or digital marketing, preferably in a public-sector or community-focused role.

+ Proven ability to write effective, engaging copy for social media, particularly on topics related to local government or public service.

+ Proficiency in social media platforms and management tools (e.g., SproutSocial, Hootsuite) and familiarity with basic graphic design (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) and video editing tools (Premiere, CapCut, or similar).

+ Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.

+ Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

+ Familiarity with public engagement principles and public participation strategies.

+ Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is strongly preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

+ Background in storytelling, journalism, or public relations, with demonstrated experience in community engagement.

+ Knowledge of Salt Lake City government structure, current community issues, and municipal communications.

+ Experience with advanced social media analytics, social listening, and engagement strategies.

+ Familiarity with project management tools (e.g., Asana, Trello) to manage content workflows and ensure smooth collaboration.

+ Proficiency in AP Style and knowledge of web accessibility standards and best practices for digital content.
