Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is in search of a Solid Waste Outreach Specialist to help improve recycling and composting in Seattle's apartments and condos. This person will support education and outreach efforts to help apartment residents keep recyclables and compostable items out of the garbage. This position supports the Recycling and Composting Program Manager and works in coordination with internal SPU staff, consultants, and the collection company's outreach staff.

* Visit multifamily buildings to improve the collection of recyclable and compostable materials and to prevent them from going into the garbage. This involves evaluating all solid waste collection areas, talking to property management and maintenance staff about solid waste issues, troubleshooting, making recommendations and implementing improvements.
* Collaborate with property management and maintenance staff to train residents on proper solid waste sorting. Organize and conduct resident training events, such as tabling events, presentations, and distribution of materials to residents' doors. Coordinate translations and with interpretation staff to provide in-language information, as needed.
* Track promptly and accurately all aspects of outreach program in program database, including properties that request help, outreach conducted, materials provided, etc.
* Deliver outreach materials (such as posters, brochures, and containers) and install materials as requested by multifamily property staff.
* Keep detailed inventory management of incoming and outgoing materials and supplies. Keep physical materials organized. Coordinate with outreach partners to ensure all the materials needed for the program are available.

Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.Experience: One (1) year of experience in planning and research related to food systems, land use, urban economics, human services, environmental issues, conservation or other work directly related to City planning, solid waste, and development work.
Education: Bachelor's degree in planning, urban design, environmental studies, public administration, or a related field OR two (2) additional years of relevant experience (Combinations of appropriate education, training, certification, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability to the minimum education and experience requirements).
The ideal candidate should possess some or most of the following:
* Experience conducting outreach.
* Experience providing customer service or conducting cold calls/visits.
* Experience with public speaking, conducting presentations and training events.
* Knowledge of solid waste and waste reduction in Seattle or other regions; Knowledge of food systems.
* Experience with data tracking, record keeping, and managing databases.
* Experience working with multicultural audiences, including the ability to speak additional languages.
* Demonstrated reliability and attention to detail, excel at follow-through, ability to prioritize, and motivation to learn new skills on the job.
* Skilled in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and other Microsoft programs.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
* Some evening and/or weekend work is needed in this position.
* This position requires some lifting and moving materials.
* This position requires the ability to travel throughout the Seattle area to deliver posters, containers, and other materials.
Workplace Environment (Telework Expectation): This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.?Starting November 4, 2024, City employees will have the option to work remotely two days a week.?Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.

The full salary range for this position is: $42.32 - 49.32 per hour.
