Duties Description The New York State Education Department's (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Special Education Assistant position at the New York State School for the Deaf. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for the classroom care of students in the school's education or residential programs. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:•Work with individual students or groups of students on special instructional projects;•Provide supervision, and guidance to students in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch;•Escort students to various classes on and off campus; •Provide direct instruction under the supervision and guidance of the Instructor; and•Directly supervise students and assist in related instructional work as required. Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a High School diploma or a High School Equivalency diploma AND the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children AND New York State certification as a Teaching Assistant, or be able to obtain a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate within one (1) year of employment. Continued employment as a Special Education Assistant is dependent upon maintaining the appropriate level of New York State Teaching Assistant certificate. Failure to maintain the appropriate level of New York State Teaching Assistant certificate will result in removal from employment.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates who have the following: •Experience working with special needs students particularly deaf or hard of hearing;•The ability to communicate through ASL/Sign Language; and•Experience working with adults as part of a team. Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees' negotiating unit. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant's expense. Fees associated with fingerprinting do not apply if applicant's fingerprints exist in the NYS TEACH System. Verification of degree and/or transcripts will be required for all candidates at the time of interview. Candidates are required to obtain a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate within one (1) year of employment. After one (1) year of employment, continued employment as a Special Education Assistant is dependent upon maintaining the appropriate level of certification as a New York State Teaching Assistant. Failure to obtain a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate within one (1) year of employment will result in removal from employment. After one (1) year of employment, failure to maintain a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate will result in removal from employment. The work year shall consist of 183 days during the school year, plus 30 days during the summer, plus additional four (4) days for program related activities for a total of 217 days. The work schedule for this position includes the hours of Monday 7:45am-3:45pm, Tuesday through Friday 7:00am-3:00pm.This position leads to a maximum salary of $43,199-44,684 based on annual performance advances.
