Temparary Position $14.50 per hour SUMMARY: Providing direct Behavior Intervention to students in the school environment. Working directly under the supervision of Special Education Teacher (s) in achieving the goals and objectives as stated on each child's Behavior Intervention Plan.
  • Coaching students to exhibit desired behaviors as opportunities to do so arise in the course of the day-to-day routine.
  • Giving students cues to perform desired behaviors, then gradually reducing those cues' strength until students no longer need them.
  • Teaching students the discrete but related steps in desired behavioral sequences, and providing reinforcement as they master each one.
Assignments will be at any district school building where students need higher-level behavioral support. The postilion will be roving as the assignment needs to change. This position is based on student needs, and as needs change, the position may be phased out. Therefore, this will be a temporary position. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Become familiar with basic special education knowledge as covered in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act 1997, with emphasis on due process procedures and confidentiality of information and records.
  • Understands and follows school district policy and uses a proper chain of command.
  • Implements individualized behavior strategies and instructional activities using materials and sequences selected/prescribed by the special education teacher and other related services personnel.
  • Works with students who may have a cognitive and physical disability and students who have emotional regulation needs and/or may be aggressive or disruptive in class
  • Provides Behavior support which includes physical management (training provided upon hire)
  • Follow the Behavior Intervention Plan for each student, i.e. Supervise and manage student behavior in a variety of school settings. Disciplines students in a manner consistent with school and teacher procedures and as outlined in the BIP.
  • Provides Personal Care/Meets the personal needs of disabled children including toileting, feeding, locomotion, and health needs and is physically and emotionally able to handle the rigorous demands of working with all disabled children.
  • Consultation and collaboration with Special Education and Regular Education Teachers as well as related service staff
  • Under the direction of the Special Education Teacher, helps to maintain a positive classroom environment the through the performance of duties such as making attractive bulletin boards, producing interesting instructional materials, using equipment and materials appropriately, keeping the room and work areas clean and orderly, etc.
  • Interacts with students, parents, and staff in a positive, friendly, and encouraging manner.
  • Acts ethically and confidentially in all aspects of employment.
  • Will, with the supervising teacher, develop, maintain and document a professional growth plan in accordance with the State Department of Education Standard Based Principles.
  • Displays a positive attitude toward school/special education programs and shows respect for leadership and programming decisions made by supervisors.
  • Performs such duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:
    • HS Diploma required, BA/BS is strongly preferred.
    • Experience working with students with disabilities and emotional/behavioral disorders preferred
    • Ability to pass paraprofessional praxis, or equivalent college credits
    • Demonstrated ability to accomplish the major duties and responsibilities listed below.
    STANDARDS and QUALITY ASSURANCE:
    • Be at least 18 years of age
    • Have a high school diploma, but BA/BS strongly preferred.
    • Be capable of physically assisting students with specials needs as required (positioning, lifting (up to 50 lbs), transferring, restraining, etc.)
    • Have demonstrated ability to work effectively under the direction of others
    • Have demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others
    • Have the willingness to assume any responsibilities appropriate for the position
