BARBOUR COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION JOB TITLE: Special Education Personal Assistant REPORTS TO: Principal, Special Education Director, & Special Education Teacher FLSA: Non-Exempt POTENTIAL LOCATION: Barbour County Primary School (Gr. K - 1), Clayton, AL Barbour County Intermediate School (Gr. 2-6), Louisville, AL Barbour County High School (Gr. 7 - 12), Clayton, AL CONTRACT PERIOD: 9-month / 182 day SALARY SCHEDULE: Based on Board Approved Salary Matrix DEADLINE: Position open until filled QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification /licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
  • Demonstrated success in relevant work experience
  • Ability and willingness to work in a highly demanding, stressful environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication with students, parents, and others
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member
  • Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Physical strength, agility, dexterity, acuity, and mobility to perform job responsibilities
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information
  • Ability to follow instructions and accept constructive feedback
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, assist with student toileting and specific hygiene needs
  • Ability to transfer students, feed students, and provide physical intervention when required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed to provide adult assistance on special education buses
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance
  • Knowledge of CPR and first aid
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require
  • JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
    • Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning
    • Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene
    • Assist in the management of student behavior including crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed
    • Assist with gathering behavior data
    • Earn and maintain all certifications required by the Alabama State Department of Education and/or the Barbour County School District
    • Maintain current knowledge of students' Individualized Education Plans and perform duties in compliance with those plans
    • Work with individual students or small groups to support the development of motor skills
    • Assume responsibility for learning about and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs
    • Supervise children during play periods to ensure their safety
    • Inform teachers when special needs for individual students arise
    • Assist with field trips and other similar experiences
    • Help teachers prepare instructional materials and classroom displays
    • Escort or assist children between classes as needed
    • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned
    • Perform playground, lunch, and bus duty as assigned
    • Maintain the confidentiality of all special education records
    • Maintain knowledge of and follow the Alabama Educators' Code of Ethics
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force as needed to move objects. May be required to restrain a physically active individual as a temporary safety measure. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
