Job Summary: The special candidate for this position will have an excellent skillset in building a positive relationship with a special needs student. The individual will travel and support the student in the general education setting while providing academic interventions through communications between the general and special education teacher. The role includes providing the student breaks, sensory support, and a commitment to the success of the assigned student.
Requirements:
- Willing to learn new skills specific to working with students with ASD.
- Assist the classroom teacher and special education teacher in delivering instruction to support students with special needs in meeting their goals and objectives.
- Ability to demonstrate a positive, professional relationship with parents, students, peers, building principal, teachers, and supervisor.
- The ability to navigate a busy schedule that involves travel throughout the building and the campus of the Flint Cultural Center Campus.
- Ability to keep a high level of confidentiality.
- Excellent attendance required.
- Ability to follow written plans and collect data as needed.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Self-motivated.
- Actively engaged.
- Previous experience working with children with special needs preferred.
- Experience working with ASD strongly preferred.
- Bachelor's degree preferred in the area of education, child development, psychology or related field or an associate's degree or relevant work experience with special needs kids.
Duties: - Works directly with children with special needs in the development of educational learning, life skills, etc.
- Candidate must have ability to perform gross motor activities such as running, climbing, and physical agility.
- Requires heavy lifting.
- May involve assistance in toileting of both male and female students.
- May involve managing physically aggressive students.
- Required to successfully complete classes and/or training (when necessary) to maintain position.
- Candidate must be high mobile in terms of gross motor activities.
- May require flexibility in schedule to meet the needs of students.
- Must be able to perform duties of the job.
- Must successfully complete classes and/or training (when necessary) to maintain position such as CPI, restorative practices, management in the active classroom, etc.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
