To become a special education teacher in Washington state, you need to meet the following requirements:
  • Education Earn a bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited university. The degree must be in an approved teacher education program that focuses on special education.
  • Certification Complete a state-approved teacher preparation program and earn a Residency Teaching Certificate.
  • Tests Pass the Washington Educator Skills Test (WEST-B) basic skills assessment, the WEST-E content assessment, and a special education assessment.
  • Background check Complete a background check, including fingerprinting, and submit a character and fitness supplement.
  • Endorsement Earn a special education endorsement. This can be done by completing a certification-only program or earning a master's degree in education with a special education endorsement.
  • Practicum Complete a 200-hour practicum in a special education classroom.
