The manager of Specialty/Outpatient Pharmacy will be the pharmacist in-charge, who provides leadership and direction for effective pharmacy operations. They will be directly responsible for specialty pharmacy operations, specialty pharmacy call center services, medication access and affordability services, specialty pharmacy accreditation, and strategies for business growth and service development. The manager will also provide leadership for pharmacy services for discharge patients, employees and specialty patients. This position requires thorough understanding of drug pricing, medication reimbursement, and the specialty pharmacy marketplace, and a working knowledge of the 340B Drug Pricing Program. The incumbent will be a member of the Pharmacy Leadership Team, and will contribute to departmental oversight, teamwork, and strategy under the leadership of the System Director of Pharmacy. Problems encountered are of a high level of scope and complexity. This position requires a great deal of organizational skill, innovation, independence, creativity and flexibility for decision making and problem solving. Interactions will involve supervising pharmacists, directors from pharmacy, employees, discharged patients, pharmaceutical company vendors, and prescription drug benefit companies.Roles and Responsibilities:Pharmacy
  • Develop and maintain efficient workflows, key performance indicators, and inventory management practices to support specialty patients, discharge patients, employees, and other customers while ensuring compliance with New York State, federal laws, and 340B regulations.
  • Coordinate the identification, communication, and resolution of daily pharmacy operational issues, identify service gaps, and implement strategies to improve pharmacy services and customer satisfaction.
  • Perform audits, provide staff education, and maintain specialty training modules to ensure adherence to specialty pharmacy guidelines, policies, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with pharmacy and healthcare providers to design disease state protocols, facilitate prior authorizations with insurers, and integrate specialty pharmacy services into ambulatory patient care.
  • Provide leadership in customer service, maintain a well-organized pharmacy environment, serve as a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents, and take on additional responsibilities as needed.
Specialty Pharmacy Accreditation
  • Ensure the specialty/outpatient pharmacy meets or exceeds all applicable accreditation standards by maintaining organized, up-to-date compliance documentation and ensuring staff understand their connection to daily responsibilities.
  • Coordinate all aspects of accreditation and reaccreditation, including the submission of materials for review, preparation for on-site visits, and addressing areas of non-compliance with detailed, timely action plans.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of specialty accreditation standards and proactively implement strategies to uphold and demonstrate compliance.
Human Resource
  • Supervise pharmacy personnel in delivering medication services, including recruitment, hiring, disciplinary actions, and completing performance evaluations, while monitoring and managing time-off requests and payroll submissions.
  • Identify educational needs, coordinate staff development programs, assess competencies, and address personnel issues proactively to ensure a skilled and effective specialty pharmacy team.
Manufacturer and Payer Contracting
  • Negotiate medication access for limited distribution drugs and secure inclusion of the specialty/outpatient pharmacy in preferred payer networks by collaborating with pharmaceutical manufacturers, employers, payers, and prescription benefit managers.
  • Review and analyze reimbursement terms in payer contracts, collaborating with the System Director of Pharmacy and Finance to execute agreements while fostering strong relationships with drug manufacturer vendors to enhance collaboration opportunities.
Budgeting and Finance
  • Develop and maintain reports to analyze specialty/outpatient pharmacy profitability, assist with the annual budget process, and prepare monthly budget variance reports in collaboration with the System Director of Pharmacy.
  • Maintain expertise in prescription billing and reimbursement, serve as a resource for resolving related issues, and create business plans or coordinate re-billing services to enhance the financial health of the pharmacy.
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Education - Graduation from an accredited College of Pharmacy with a B.S. or PharmD degree.
  • Experience - Specialty pharmacy experience is required. Retail pharmacy experience preferred but not required. Completion of ASHP Accredited PGY1 Practice/Community and PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency training programs and experience with the administration of the 340B Drug Pricing Program is preferred. Also, certification in Board of Pharmacy specialties, such as Specialty Pharmacy (BCSP), Oncology Pharmacy (BCOP), and Ambulatory Care (BCACP), or, a Certified Specialty Pharmacist (CSP) credential from the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy is preferred but not required.
  • Five (5) years of clinical patient care and orders management experience or completion of a PGY2 residency training program or combination of clinical patient care and residency training.
  • Licensure - Currently licensed in the State of New York. Must be certified immunizer in New York.
  • Special skills - Must possess strong leadership and customer service, verbal and written communication, presentation, organizational and data analysis skills. This individual must possess exceptional time management skills.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Health-system pharmacy experience preferred, but not required.

  • Sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours) is often necessary
  • Must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job
Compensation Disclosure:
  • $145,000 to $175,000 per year
