DescriptionPOSITION SUMMARY:Under the supervision of the Sports Director the Sports Official is responsible for the supervision, management, and assistance of the assigned YMCA sports programs as they specifically relate to the games and the calling of them. They hold responsibility for all aspects of the programs when the Director is unavailable. They are responsible for managing these functions in accordance with the stated mission, goals, and policies established by the administrative staff, governing committees, and Board of Directors of the YMCA.Job Schedule: Saturdays from 8:30am - 4:30pm starting January 11th through March 1st. Location is Woollen Gym (300 South Road, Chapel Hill)ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide feedback and communication to the Sports Director about the program.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of league initiatives; including scheduling, team-building, and phone calls.
- Maintains strong, positive relationship and strong communication with staff, participants, parents, and school faculty.
- Display confidence when interacting with parents, coaches, and participants and directly address poor sportsmanship, negative competition, and negative cheering.
- Serve as on-site director for games and practices.
- Acts as staff member in charge when the Sports Director is not present.
- Ensure that the referees are performing to standards and expectations set forth; including training, coaching, and supervising.
- Ensure that sports facilities are clean and ready before and after programs.
- Attend departmental and program meetings and events.
- Ensure all programs are safe and maintains the highest safety standards at all times.
- Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
- Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
- Other duties deemed appropriate by the Sports Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must have a general understanding of sports, rules of the game, and interest in working with youth sporting leagues.
- Ability to work with and supervise peers, encourage and motivate youth, and maintain a safe environment.
- Must obtain certifications through the YMCA in Basic Life Support/First Aid and Emergency Oxygen upon hire.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Multi-lingual desired but not required.
