Salary: $22.64 - $30.21 HourlyLocation : Milaca, MNJob Type: Full-timeJob Number: 00764Department: Public WorksOpening Date: 11/02/2024DescriptionThe Senior Highway Maintenance Worker maintains roads, bridges, and right-of-ways in a safe condition; performs general and special highway maintenance work; operates equipment at skilled and responsible levels; and performs preventative maintenance on buildings, equipment, and tools; all while adhering to safety procedures.This position is covered by the Local 49 bargaining unit. For a complete position description, click Complete 2024 pay scale is $22.64-$30.21/hr.This position will be based out of the Milaca or Wahkon location with a regular work schedule of Monday - Friday, 7 - 3:30 in the winter, and Monday - Thursday, 6 - 4:30 in the summer. Employees will be on a rotating schedule to provide coverage on Fridays during the summer. Must be available for immediate call out to maintain safe roads.Essential Functions 1. Maintains roads, bridges, and right-of-ways in safe manner by operating a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment and tools with considerable skill. Duties include, but are not limited to: blading, snow plowing, ice control/sanding; determining when and where to place sand and/or salt; mowing, applying herbicides; brush cutting, and removal of brush and trees encroaching on right-of- way; marking pavement; graveling; trash removal; sealing cracks; replacing culverts, etc. 2. Must be available for 24/7 response if needed for hazardous weather or emergency situations during evenings, night, and weekends. Performs emergency snowplowing, ice control, hauling, tree removal, and other emergency maintenance operations during severe weather, road washouts, road closures, etc.3. Assists with the maintenance of and performs preventative maintenance on the highway maintenance shop, department buildings and grounds, shop equipment, and tools. Conducts monthly shop inspection. Secures shop buildings at the end of the day. Performs a variety of janitorial and maintenance duties in and around the highway maintenance shop.4. Responsible for service, appearance, safety, and general condition of designated equipment. Conducts daily safety check of all equipment including fluid levels, lights, tires, etc. Performs complete service including regular fluid changes, lubrication, and maintenance on trucks and equipment assigned. Installs and removes snow plow equipment as directed by the Highway Maintenance Superintendent.5. Performs sign replacement, and installs temporary signs and barricades.6. Communicates courteously and professionally, and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions. Conveys basic information to the public, and resolves routine complaints.7. Fabricates special tools and equipment for highway maintenance.8. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent, and three years experience in a related position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid Minnesota Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required. Experience operating heavy equipment and snow plow trucks preferred. Tanker endorsement and a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) are also preferred. Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be obtained within 6 months of hire.Must have the physical ability to perform heavy manual labor, have a good driving record and be available for immediate call-out at any hour for snow plowing or other emergency work. New hires are required to successfully pass a pre-employment drug test. All employees in this classification are subject to random drug and alcohol testing, as mandated by the DOT Agency Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.Must attend and comprehend special training regarding safety and work procedures relating to the job.Selection Process Candidates will be selected based on a review of training and experience.
