Job SummaryThe Postpartum/Pediatric RN is responsible for the professional nursing care of all assigned patients in accordance with the established standards of care and within the scope of the current Nurse Practice Act. The RN is responsible for maintaining the patient's medical record, paper and/or electronic, the the properdocumentation of nursing observation and actions taken. The RN plans, delegates, and coordinates the nursingcare provided to the patient. Utilizing the nursing process and using evidenced-based practice, the RN isresponsible for maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment, maintaining the patient's dignity and privacyat all times. This position requires a sound knowledge of all aspects of nursing care including the antepartum postpartum, and pediatric patients.Job QualificationsGraduate of an accredited school of nursing and current licensure as a registered nurse by the MississippiState Board of NursingCurrent knowledge and skills approprate to the age and type of patient population servedProficient oral, computer, and written communication skills. Proficient interpersonal skills. Current Basic Life Support Certification (CPR)Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification (PALS)Physical DemandsOccasionally = 1 - 33% of the workdayFrequently = 34 - 66% of the workdayContinuously = 67 - 100% of the workdayStanding or Walking - Continuously - The RN may be on her/his feet the majority of the day to perform direct and in-direct patient care. Sitting - Frequently - The RN is required to sit at various desks for documentation via paper or electronicallyvia computer or other tasks such as in-services. Bending - Occasional; obtaining, organizing, and restocking supplies and in direct patient care activities.Climbing/Reaching - Occasionally - The RN should be able to climb a foot stool or small ladder when stocking supplies as well as reaching for supplies. The RN should be able to stand on foot stool at the patient's bedsideif needed. Push/Pull - Occasional - The RN may perform push/pull motions when transporting patients and/or movingequipment on various surfaces. Handling/Lifting 0-24 lbs - frequently25-100 lbs - occasionallyThe employee may be required to help lift and/or handle objects from 1 - 300 lbs.Assistance in moving patients and use of the pull/push activity is done frequently.For heavier activities, staff should always seek assistance and use ergonomic training. Manual Dexterity Hands Simple grasp - continuously Firm grasp - frequently Fine manipulation - frequently Feet Standing and/or walking - continuously or frequentlyFine and gross motor skills are used in venous punctures, patient care activities,information entry on computers, and adjustments on equipment. Speaking/Hearing - Continuously Speaking - ability to communicate with patients, co-workers, physicians, and/or visitors Hearing - must have functional with or without correction Seeing - must have functional with or without correctionMental and Emotional Demands/RequirementsThe Postpartum/Pediatric RN must be able to: Manage stress appropriatelyMake decisions under pressureManage anger, fear, hostility appropriatelyHandle multiple prioritiesWork independently, concentration and memory to detail Patient Population - Scope of ServiceThe population for the Postpartum/Pediatric unit ranges from 2-3 days old to over 90 years of age. Pediatric patients range from 2-3 days old to 15 y/o and make up 5-10% of the unit's population. Postpartum or obstetrical patients range from 12y/o to the oldest of women of childbearing age. These patients make up approximately 85% of the patient population. Patients who are surgicalor medical overflow patients range from age 12 to geriatric patients and make up approximately5-10% of the population on the unit. This unit is operational 24 hours/day, 365 days/year
