Performs Sterile Processing Technician II functions and assists with department educational needs such as in-services, preceptor/training, documentation of competencies and quality control. Minimum Qualifications:High school diploma or GED certified with either the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CS/SPD) or the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management (IAHCSMM) or in the case of a Certified Surgical Tech (CST), may float to the OR in times of critical needs; advanced knowledge of various types of reusable surgical instrumentation, including power equipment and micro surgical instrumentation.Work Environment:Work environment includes sterile storeroom, Central Processing, surgery settings, and designated clinical departments; May be exposed to hazardous conditions, infections and infectious diseases; occasionally subject to irregular hours, call, and unpleasant elements; Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries from customers; interaction with physicians, licensed staff, general hospital staff and company representatives.Supervisory Responsibilities:None.Financial Responsibilities:None.Essential Functions:Assembles case carts.Operates a sterilizer and washer/decontamination and case cart washer.Administers conduction Biological Testing on all sterilizers: Steam Sterrad and Steris. Cleans patient care equipment (i.e. I.V. pumps, feeding pumps, pneumatic pumps, CPM machines, PCA, and hypo/hyperthermia units, etc.)Monitors sterilization, record keeping, and quality assurance protocols.Performs basic computer functions.Practices within the standards of AORN, OSHA and the policies and procedures of MUSC.Assists in department orientation, training and precepting new employees for both the Sterile Processing and Operating room departments.Assists with quality measurement and monitoring by performing regular instrument set and case cart audits.Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.Physical Requirements:Physical requirements are primarily related to the essential functions of any job. In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to stand, walk sit, use hands, stoop, talk, and hear. Must be able to lift or exert energy up to 10 pounds 75% of the time and 25 pounds 25% of the time and close vision.Mental Requirements:Must have the ability to read and understand instructions, correspondence and memos; possess the ability to write correspondence and the ability to effectively present information one on one or in group situations; possess the ability to perform math functions (add, subtract, multiply and divide) using numbers and units of money; ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form; deals with problems involving variables and standardized situations.Age Groups:This position interacts primarily with adults and provides no patient care.
