This position provides supervision in the form of leadership and mentorship to include work allocation, scheduling and problem resolution for staff in the department. The Sterile Processing supervisor will provide daily operational oversight while working alongside colleagues to reach optimal outcomes. This position provides and integrates clinical leadership, consistent with the philosophy and goals of the institution. The supervisor of Sterile Processing will collaborate with leadership to enhance quality outcomes, focus on recruitment and retention, staff education and support and financial stewardship. The supervisor plays a crucial role to ensure unit compliance for all Joint Commission standards related to Sterile Processing. Roles and Responsibilities:
- Displays commitment to the mission of the hospital and its values
- Assist with clinical management and administrative coordination of unit.
- Assist with selecting, orienting, educating, scheduling, coaching, counseling of staff with Manager consistent with principles of a caring, fair and professional work environment.
- Responsible for participating in shared decision-making within the established annual unit budget and for making recommendations and decisions which promote the cost-effective allocation of resources.
- Participates in quality improvement programs consistent with organizational goals.
- Under the direction of Unit Manager, responsible for the consistent implementation and monitoring of organizational policies, goals and standards within the unit.
- Identify own professional development needs and seek appropriate resources to meet them.
- Adapts to the operational needs of the department.
- This includes flexibility of shift to ensure 2nd and 3rd shifts are supported as needed
- Responsible for coordination of updating SPM libraries as needed.
- Cleans, decontaminates, inspects and assembles a high variety of complex surgical instruments and instrument sets.
- Oversees the operation and troubleshooting of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization equipment.
- Maintains knowledge of reprocessing standards, techniques, instrumentation and equipment through participation in professional organizations and attendance at relevant continuing education programs and conferences.
- Assists in establishing and updating standards of supplies, chemicals and materials used in the area of responsibility. This includes sterile preparation, autoclaving, and operating room materials, preparing and submitting requisitions for non-inventory and inventory items, developing inventory standards and maintaining stock at the established levels, identifying items that are to be stored and withdrawn from the distribution area, and maintaining a list of unique items
- Interacts closely with the Surgical Services, Infection Control, Risk Management and Safety departments to identify and mitigate potential patient safety issues.
- Assists in the implementation of new technologies that are used in the Reprocessing area, as well as new instrumentation used for many types of surgical procedures.
- Identifies staff training needs and collaborates with the Manager of Sterile Processing, to provide guidance and support for staff education and certification.
- Flexible in assuming other appropriate responsibilities not noted above.
