Responsibilities

The Stop-Out Prevention Specialist reports to the Assistant Vice President for Student Development and supports students who may be at risk through degree completion. The Stop-Out Prevention Specialist coordinates and implements stop out prevention initiatives in conjunction with providing support services and implementing immediate intervention strategies for targeted students to reduce the stop-out rate; collects, interprets and use data from stop-out intervention systems to develop strategies/interventions addressing stop out prevention; develops data-driven strategies on problem solving,self-advocacy, academic mindset, self-regulation, persistence, and positive behavior to share across campus community; researches model programs for stop out prevention; coordinate stop-out intervention activities to include the learning community, orientation, convenings, and collaborate with re-engagement coaches; manages stop-out intervention systems and resources; coordinates all scholarships and need-based grant opportunities with financial aid officer; creates and maintain appropriate records and documentation for each student, collects and evaluates data including grades, tracks students progress and performance, provides outreach and early interventions, and refers students for personal, educational, and career counseling. Reviews transcripts, grade reports, and other documents to determine the most appropriate path to accelerate degree completion and success. Supports students in navigating their academic experience by assisting with academic support, creative problem solving, and timely connection to academic and non-academic resources. Communicates with students face-to-face, by phone, via email or zoom, and other software to maintain contact and establish rapport. The Stop-Out Prevention Specialist coordinates and supports other phases of the project, collaborates continuously with key offices on campus to connect students to resources across the University and within the community. Must comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) as well as with all university procedures and policies. Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.

Minimum: Bachelors or higher degree in a related field, such as Education, Psychology, Business, Social Work or Counseling preferred. The stop-out prevention specialist will be required to have at least five years of experience working with first-generation, low-income, and underserved populations within the higher education environment. In addition, the candidate must have at least two years of experience in serving at-risk and/or stop-out student populations. Must demonstrate a high level of competence in how to interpret data analytics. Familiarity with or willingness to learn Microsoft Office, Jenzabar and related Enterprise Resources Programs (ERPs) is required. Experience in leveraging passion and dedication for student success into measurable outcomes that improve the students overall college experience. Must be knowledgeable of best practices for student retention and success and prior work experience with at risk and stoop out student populations. Ability to provide direction and guidance, build a trusting relationship, work independently and with colleagues in a team effort, maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the needs of diverse populations, work in a fast-paced environment, respond well under pressure, and adapt to change required. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, handle and prioritize simultaneous work assignments, and exercise sound judgement required. Must possess exceptional listening, organizational, problem-solving, decision making, creativity, oral and written communication, and interpersonal relation skills. Must be able to develop and maintain databases and reports, analyze data, and use appropriate and accessible technologies to diversify delivery methods of student support. Understanding of student development theory and current stop-out prevention methodologies a plus. Must have a commitment to serve and help students to achieve academic success.
