Job description - We seek one research assistant to support restoration planning for native fishes in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Specifically, this individual will support the Great Lakes Fishery Commission Native Fishes Restoration Coordinator in organizing and preparing for expert elicitation workshops to delineate conservation/restoration units and identify threats to populations of coregonines (ciscoes and whitefishes) in the Great Lakes. The position involves (1) compiling, organizing, and summarizing historical and contemporary information (e.g., via synthetic figures, tables, and presentations) on coregonine populations in support of expert elicitation workshops (60%), (2) assisting with workshop planning and logistics (20%), and (3) assisting with the preparation of workshop reports and associated publications (20%). The successful candidate will work closely with scientists at the Great Lakes Science Center and Great Lakes Fishery Commission. The expectation for the successful applicant is to work 20 to 40 hours per week, with some flexibility to choose those hours. The initial appointment will be for one year with a rate of $27.88/hour but includes no benefits. The position will start in January 2025.

Qualifications - The successful candidate will be hired under a student services contract. Hence, the applicant must either be a currently enrolled graduate student or have obtained a BS or MS degree within the past 12 months. Applicants must demonstrate (1) the capacity to work independently and as a member of a team and (2) experience conducting scientific research, including literature review and generation of data synthesis products (e.g., figures). Preference will be given to candidates with extensive experience with data compilation and scientific writing. Knowledge of fish biology and ecology and program R is also preferred.
