Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARY: Perform a variety of circulation/multimedia, reserve and interlibrary loan activities to include checking out and returning materials, recording payments for fines, accepting reserve requests for books, and tracing missing library materials. Responsible for library security and the safety of users during the morning, evening and weekend hours, or in the absence of library staff. Open or close the library as scheduled. Monitor desk schedules and make arrangements for last minute coverage when needed. SUPERVISION: This position reports to the Access Services Manager and Circulation Desk Supervisor. This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but will direct and monitor the work of Circulation Desk Student Assistants. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Routine desk duties as scheduled, including, but not limited to, charging/discharging materials, processing electronic payments for outstanding fines or fees, placing recalls/holds, utilizing the library's circulation and interlibrary loan systems.
- Accept faculty reserve requests for library books, personal book copies, and photocopies.
- Tracing/searching for missing library materials.
- Interlibrary loan activities, including retrieval and scanning of library materials to be sent to requesting libraries.
- Advise users regarding library policies or procedures; refer questions regarding overdue, and lost items, fines, claims and returns to library staff when needed.
- Respond to security-gate alarms, write incident reports when required.
- Responsible for opening/closing the Library on designated shifts.
- Responsible for directing and monitoring the work of Circulation Desk Student assistants.
- Respond to building emergencies in the absence of library staff. Notify after hours staff or Public Safety when needed.
- Assist with basic operation of printers and trouble shoot printer issues; report ongoing problems requiring service to Library Access Services Staff.
- Notify the Access Services Manager or the Circulation Desk Supervisor of any problems related to policies, procedures, or building security.
- Operate the elevator for accessibility purposes when required.
QUALIFICATIONS: The Ideal candidate will be an Ithaca College Student who has strong attention to detail, organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, and working knowledge of personal computers. Candidates must be available to work evenings, late nights, weekends, or mornings. Preference will be given to those candidates that have previously worked at Ithaca College Library as a Circulation Desk Assistant. Library experience or experience working a Customer Service Desk is preferred.
