The primary role of the Student Nurse Extern is the execution of the nursing process in providing required care and evaluation of care given. Responsibilities include assessment, nursing diagnosis related to focus problem areas, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care. Performance of these responsibilities requires specialized knowledge and core critical thinking skills as well as excellent communication skills. This is a 10-week, summer externship beginning in May 2025. - Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.
- Collaborates with assigned RN on the development of an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.
- Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient's care and reviews documentation with assigned RN.
- Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of care.
- Utilizes holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.
- Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgments and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.
- Responds quickly and accurately to the patient's change in condition or response to treatment while keeping assigned RN informedPatient Education
- Assess and choose teaching strategies appropriate to the patients' and their families' age-specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
- Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.
- Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.QualificationsRequired:
- Current enrollment in an accredited Associates Degree in Nursing Program OR
- Successful completion of 3rd year accredited Bachelors of Science in Nursing Program
- GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
- Must be able to successfully complete a basic computer course through in-hospital training.
- Must successfully complete affiliate orientation and competencies.Preferred:
